Shepherd Mountain, Iron County MO

REVISED

Due to all the past snow and rain in the forecast we will NOT be going to Black Mountain.  That will be a separate adventure.

We WILL still go to Shepherd Mountain trail near Pilot Knob/Ironton.
Since I am not familiar with the trail, I can only assume it will be muddy.
I am sure it will be slick in places due to the mud and/or any remaining snow/ice.  Looking at the Satellite pic, there appears to be areas of exposed rock/glades.
Supposedly there are old mines just off the trail. While the trail is short (less than four miles) we will take our time and thoroughly explore the area.

If time allows, I plan to go walk the one mile trail at Bootleg Access and make  a trip up Hughes Mountain. Anyone who would like to join me, is welcome.
Bootleg is very low lying in places so it MIGHT be too muddy to walk. We will save Hughes for last.  It will be some backtracking as far as driving goes.

If anyone wants to we can back track more, to Caledonia BBQ or return via Farmington. There is a pretty good Mexican place there as well as a couple BBQ places, etc.

Expect: Steep, Rocky Terrain, Loose Rocks, water and/or ice and Mud.
Bring: Water, Snack, Lunch, trekking poles, camera, etc.
Wear: Clothing appropriate for the weather, Layers to shed.
Extra shoes and dry, clean clothes might not be a bad idea.

Shepherd Mountain is approximately 1.50 hours from St Louis City.

Lets try that again: If anyone would like to carpool from FESTUS, Frank has room for 3

    January 10, 2014

    • Mark M.

I would like to carpool but Festus is 50 miles from where I live. Is anybody else carpooling from Saint Louis???

      January 10, 2014

  • Frank O.

I'm looking forward to seeing familiar faces on this one. Hopefully snow will not lead to cancellation. If anyone wants a ride I will be leaving Festus Maximus at 8.00 or so.

Frank, as of now, we will do Shepherd for sure and maybe an alternate for Black HOWEVER, there is more snow/rain/freezing rain in the forecast for that area Wed-Fri.
Just have to see what happens later in the week

Hate to drop at the last moment, but it's still raining here. I was looking forward to hiking with everyone, but I'm afraid it's going to be a mess!

It's bound to be muddy at the very least so I'd be prepared to come with extra clothes and shoes I always keep an extra bag in my car for muddy shoes.

If there is too much snow/ice still in that area on Saturday, we will hike Shepherd Mtn but may have to skip Black and choose an alternate second location, Possibly Elephant Rocks, Hughes Mountain or the trail at Bootleg Access.

The trailhead location is correct. There's a big sign on Highway 21 between Pilot Knob and Ironton. Pull into the drive for the pharmacy (formerly a Sonic restaurant) and then follow the gravel lane on the right up to the parking area.

Whoops, I see now. I obviously hadn't CLICKED. But I did check out the images posted for Black Mountain. Looks beautiful after a rain with the waterfalls running. Never been there.

Looks like the elevation change is from a little less than 1000 feet up to 1600 feet.
