I Heart NH Loop

  • June 1, 2013 · 9:00 AM

Final date:

Saturday, June 1,[masked]:00 AM to Tuesday, June 4, 2013, 5:00 PM

* It is possible to do the first two days (Sat+Sun) and return to Conway!

The "I Heart NH Loop" will take us from Conway NH, over quiet roads to Gorham, down through Jackson to Crawford Notch State Park, to Lincoln and finally over the Kancamagus Pass back to Conway. We will camp every night and cover 160 mlies in four days which should be a comfortable daily distance. This is a good beginner distance but due to the amount of climbing all participants should be very fit and confident in their abilities. Each rider is responsible for their own transportation to and from Conway (Concord Coachlines is a good option) as well as for all expenses during the trip.

Thanks Paul and everyone for a great ride. I enjoyed meeting you and sharing a fun weekend adventure. No one mentioned the black flies! I'm still scratching. Looking forward to my next tour. Hopefully we'll meet again.

Paul, Thanks so much for putting the ride together. I had a great time and it was great meeting everyone. This was something I've been wanting to do for a long time. Would I do it again, in a heart beat and most definitely with you guys. I actually enjoyed riding in the rain, it was such a relief from the heat, that and the cooler air that came with the rain.

A really great tour on some of NH's most scenic roads. Although, some parts of it were really tough (like the monster hill ) I nevertheless enjoyed every aspect of it; including the sudden (and severe) thunderstorm at the end of our ride. What an adventure! Hope you guys are staying dry...thanks for a great weekend!

Hey Amal. Mark, Peter and I ended up finishing on Sunday too - probably not too long after you guys. We could see the black clouds heading our way on 302 north and Bear Notch road looked like it would be a huge climb so we turned around and did the same road as you. It was pretty nice after the storm blew through. :)

      Great riding with you all!

    • Amal

Hey that was a wise decision! The clouds looked really black- I was fighting tree branches on our way back! I'm glad you guys were safe.

Paul led us on a beautiful ride and helped us to manage both the hills and the record-breaking heat. The size of the group was perfect, not too big, not too small. I hope to see Paul and the others on future tours.

Hot, hilly and a heck of a storm. Great group of people. Can't wait for my next tour!

It looks like Meetup.com won't let us post pics until the event is over. 5PM tonight!

Hi Paul, I'm still planing on going. I also do backpacking, so I have the equipment and prefer wild camping and other than a shower I'll be good to go. A couple of questions. You mentioned enough money for the trip, about how much should we have for the trip? Where will we be parking our cars, for those of us that do drive, be able to park safely?

  • Amal

Hi Paul - I'm a bit on the fence at the moment. I haven't been able to figure out the logistics of this trip -- how to transport my camping gear (using only my bike) and potentially only doing part of the loop. Sorry, it sounds dumb, I know, but unless I can come up with an idea that works, I think it's probably best that I drop out.

Hi Amal. On the second day it will be very easy to get back to the start - just continue down route 16 back to Conway. The second day will be about 34 miles with this option.

Thanks Paul -- posted a note to the message board.

I'm still on. Are you making reservations for the 2 NF campgrounds or just the private ones? Also what did you decide for Friday night? Conway Hosktel or Eastern Slope campground? I'm a little tentative about Monday and Tuesday at this point depending on my work schedule and whether I'm confident about making it over the Kanc.

I'm still planning on coming but I've never done this before and will just trust my commonsense to bring what I need and buy the rest en route. If worse comes to worse, I'll jump on a bus back to my car!

Hi Tom. Please let me know if you're still interested in this trip so I can get a final headcount for the campgrounds. Thanks!

I am not going on this trip.

I thought I replied but maybe never clicked "Post". Duh!

I'm interested, but not sure how the schedule will work yet. Also concerned about camping during black fly season. That can be interesting!

In Conway NH the average high temp on May 15 is 65 with an average low of 37. Will the campgrounds even be open before Memorial Day?

Hi Allen. The latest opening of the campgrounds we would stay at is the 18th of May (a Saturday). I like touring in cool temperatures - should be nice!

Would like to sign up for this. Need to find out what kind of equipment is needed? I do motorcycle camping, and car camping, but not bicycle camping. So I need to get smart on this.

Paul, Wanted to meet tonight at Ned's but weather delays things. Hey when can I have a look at the used gear for sale? Thanks, Mike

Still need to get some gear so I am a tentative !yes! on 6/1-thru-6/4.

Hi all. Just wanted to see what you all think about moving this trip back to the June 1st weekend. Might be slightly warmer and will give people a couple more weeks to get in shape. Let me know.

    March 22, 2013

    • Mike

At this point, June 1st is best for me.

I would love to join for the weekend in June.

I'm glad to see a trip offered in NH. Mid May does seem early, I'll have to jump on my bike soon and start building some miles and some hills. Late June to Mid July are out for me. Are you thinking mid-week?

    March 3, 2013

    • Mag in N.

Actually, the earlier weekend would be better traffic-wise. I vote for the 18th to 21st.

      I'm leaning towards 18-21 myself. :)

  • Allen F.

Interested in this one but not able to commit yet. May seems a bit early for the Whites, doesn't it? Camping during black fly season can be, um, interesting! But mostly not sure I would be in shape for the climbs that early in the season.

Forgive the stream of consciousness; those are my thoughts, but I'm still quite interested.

    March 2, 2013

    • Tom S.

I am also very interested in this trip. I share Alen's concerns about the timing. Also, I would prefer "wild" camping outside of the established campgrounds.

I also prefer wild camping, as long as we're not too big a group to avoid leaving signs that we had camped there. It will also depend on everyone's comfort level with this. Legal, dispersed campsites would be ideal..
