The first BTB meetup

This will be the first meetup of Bike Touring Boston! Suggestions are accepted for topics or the meetup can be left open for socializing. I'll post more information when we're closer to the meetup date.

**UPDATE**

We're one week away from the first event! The majority has err... NOT spoken and it seems like the preference is for this to be a fun, social get-together of like-minded cycle tourists. We can save having some structure for another time, but there will still be a few "topic tables" with themes such as credit-card touring, beginners, the Spain tour, etc.. (Interested in a topic? Post it below!) Experienced members are encouraged to pick a table where they'll be able to help out. That's all for now - see you all soon!

** ANOTHER UPDATE **

I was speaking with my contact at Wild Rover today and with around 50 people we're just at the border of where they can provide food and a private room and still make a profit. Please keep that in mind - they're expecting to make a profit from the drinks purchased at the bar, so whether your preference is something alcoholic or not, consider your purchase to be a payment for the food and location. Also, please update your RSVP if you won't be able to attend. Thanks!

    Hi Nancy
I have taken several bike tours in Europe and a fewa bike in Spain and Portugal. Spain we did the Camino de Santiago -- northern part of Spain, a historic religious pilgrimage (even though I am not catholic I found it very interesting!). In portugal, we biked the east of Lisbon in Alentejo region. Beautiful very little crowds, traffic, or tourists - great for biking. We used http://www.a2z-adventures.com/i.... A2z adventures and we loved them. It was self guided but they took excellent care of us. Gave us a gps, cell phone, maps... Called every night to check on us, tell us about the ride, which restaurants to eat in, hotels were unique. I have never been so impressed with a biking company and their high level of service!

Hope this helps a bit. feel free to reach out with specific questions.

I have spent several hours on-line looking and comparing USA tour companies but wondering about ones in Spain and how to find a good one. Any suggestions out there for this aspect of setting up a tour.
Portugal is looking very beautiful as well. Easy Rider Tours does one to both countries , mucho bucks

great group, great conversation --I will target the weeks of April 22nd to the 1st or 2nd week of May for Spain tour. Got some good suggestions the other night on how to proceed to set up a tour. Will be visiting my daughter in Sevilla from about the 14th of April to 21st so would love to set out from there. Contact me if your serious about going or can suggest a tour group. I will not take a bike over. Thanks!

doing some research this week-end and finding alot of wonderful tours but VERY expensive. I certainly would entertain self guided but not experienced enough to know how to go about it. I want to rent over there and get with folks that have 'been around'!.

Thanks for coming everyone! I'm looking forward to having more of these events. Please let me know if you're interested in having meetups on specific topics, of if you'd be interested in giving a talk.

    Nancy,

I've done two bike trips to Italy and one to France. Spain trip sounds great. I rented road bikes both times through the tour groups, which was convenient. I also visited Seville but too briefly. So, trip idea sounds great to me.

Have you received interest from others? What else do you have planned so far? Thank you

I apologize as well. I had to stay at the office until 10:30 p.m.
I am interested in learning more as this is also something completely new to me. Next time I will try to update my show status when the plan changes.

I want to sincerely apologize for being a no-show at last night's meetup. Something came up really last minute. I am very interested in bicycle touring, and connecting with other people who are also interested. As someone who's never been on an overnight bike trip, I would love to talk to people who've done it. Looking forward to future meetups!

Well done Paul, my wife Sue and I really appreciate the effort which is required for such an event. The first one is often the toughest. The venue was great, the food and beverages helped to create a very relaxing atmosphere. There was enough people to give it a good launch and a general idea that it has a reasonable following for future meetups and potential rides. The people I spoke to were very positive about bike adventures. The information we were given about local and not so local riding routes / tracks was very informative.

  • Peter B.

I sincerely apologize for not being able to make it. After a frustrating day and then having an hours drive in rush hour traffic, and then try to find a parking space just wasn't something that I was looking forward to at the end of the day. I'm glad that those that were able to make it came away with some great information.
Is it possible to arrange the next meeting on a weekend and possibly somewhere other than the heart of Boston? And how many people can only commute by something other than a bike or other transportation other than a car that are in the group?

    February 13, 2013

  • Teresa

What a great group of people! Everyone was very friendly and open-minded. I left the event feeling very inspired to try out bicycle touring. Paul and a several others there have had a lot of experience with bicycle touring and were a wealth of information!

I am very interested in some conversation about a bike tour in Spain in April/May. I have little experience on the tour scene in Europe but do a lot of road biking here. If anyone serious about this spring, please look for me tomorrow night! Nancy from Boxford

Hi, I'm not sure if I can attend any of the Boston meetings, but plan on doing some overnight trips in NH this summer. Last year I rode from Concord NH to Sunapee State Park, stopped at the lake for a swim before heading up to my campground, which was primative, but very peaceful. I also did one to Bear Brook State Park which was not as peaceful, but fun none the less.
Anyone interested in a NH tour?

Hi Mag. Funny you should ask... I try to do a White Mountains tour every summer and it's one I've been thinking about leading this year. It would be about 160 miles over four days - more info coming soon.

•Day 1, Sat, July 13, Woburn, MA - Durham, NH
•Day 2, Sun, July 14, Kittery, ME - Biddeford, ME
•Day 3, Mon, July 15, Biddeford, ME - Attitash, NH
•Day 4, Tue, July 16, Attitash, NH - Montpelier, VT
•Day 5, Wed, July 17, Montpelier, VT - Killington, VT
•Day 6, Thu, July 18, Killington, VT - Keene, NH
•Day 7, Fri, July 19, Keene, NH - Woburn, MA
Team Prick (named for the finger prick blood test diabetics endure daily) is looking for more riders. I attached the link if anyone is interested in more information. I will also be at the first event if there are questions.

Hi Trent. My goal in starting this group was only to bring people interested in touring together. It's possible that I might lead a weekend trip over the summer, but beyond that I'm not personally planning to arrange anything. Having said that, other group members are certainly welcome to either plan trips amongst themselves, or organize trips through BTB as group co-leaders. As a matter of fact, I was recently contacted by a member who has a few short trips in mind, so more information about those will be forthcoming.

Spain. Yes! I would be on board for Spring Spain trip.

A solid touring group has been needed through this site. Thank you, Paul, for organizing this. I will not be able to come tomorrow, but I will be watching for future events, and I have some trips in mind.

    Paul,
It seems lots of people are interested to participate in this first meeting. Usually meetup meetings are limited to certain number of participants, unless you can facilitate this number. I am not familiar with area, but please let me know if there is anything that I can do to help you for this first meeting. I am very excited to meet so many rider in this meeting.
