Welcome back to Big Data Analytics for 2013. We will be kicking the year off with three practical presentations from Big Data practitioners that demonstrate how Big Data tools can be applied to solve some common problems.
Joao Salcedo – Big Commerce
Flume is a critical component of the Hadoop stack used to stream data into HDFS. Joao will show how we use Flume to ingest web logs into HDFS.
Ross Farrelly – Aster
Ross will be taking us through a couple of use cases he has been working on using the Aster platform that are in progress.
Rami Mukhtar – Ambiata
Rami will run through an example of how Scoobi can be used to build a single view of a transaction from disparate sources that each provide a partial view using soft matching techniques.
Hi everyone,
I run the more strategic and less technical Forum, which is run through The Australian Big Data Group on LinkedIn.
Thanks to Joao for sharing the information. We're meeting downstairs at the City Hotel tomorrow evening from 6:30 onwards. As the downstairs is not as big, we do have limited availability.
It's always great to see new faces at the Forum, but please be advised that it's not a technical discussion, so anyone who found last night too technical, and were hoping for a more strategic or conceptual talk on 'Big Data', then it will suit you nicely. If you like the tech talk, then this meetup group is for you!
There are a few spots left, so if you would like to be added to the guest-list for the evening, please drop me a line at [masked] and I will add you to the list.

Rami mentioned last night there was also another big data group meeting later this month, one with more of a strategic focus? Does anyone have any details on that group, where and when they are meeting?

I really enjoyed the talks last night. Thanks for organising Rami. I hope the beer goal was met, or close enough...

Very much enjoyed tonight's talks. It's always great to hear of real world implementations and understand confidentiality often prevents sharing of such experiences so I really appreciate the efforts of all speakers.
The format of 1) here's the business problem we were trying to solve, 2) here's the general approach and 3) here's the actual code is in my mind a fantastic approach, especially given that there are umpteen tools around and varying audience experience.
