'City API' : How do you model a city?

What does 'city data' tell us about the people, systems and environment around us? What data sources can be used to model a city?

Guest speaker David King, Software Developer at Oxford University, will talk through a project he is leading to build an API platform for use in application development - both within the University and beyond. What are the benefits of this approach to application development and how can it be used to improve the city?

From a mobile app that provides live transport updates on bus routes and car park spaces, to a searchable book index of university libraries, the 'Oxford API' is a pioneering open-data project.

Following David's talk, we will be discussing a project to build a city-wide data platform here in Brighton.

Please RSVP to book your place at the event which is being jointly organised with BrightonPy

    Hi
    Great talk.
Could someone post a link to the oxford api. I went to new.m.ox.ac.uk ? format=json but I think I missed the correct URL.
Also what was the talk near Gatwick? Big Data Big Deal?? Sorry didn't take notes as I had a bottle in my hand. Links to the imagine brighton too.

Incidentally here's a random bus route timetable from buses.co.uk. I hope you can see that it is accessible via JSON type stuff:
    http://bh.buscms.com/api/rest/ent/route-routemap.aspx?callback=BusCms.widgets[%27route-routemap-1249%27].loadInitialCallBack&routeid=1249&format=jsonp

There's probably a better example which gives you the next n buses from the stop.

I looked last night too and I'm sure I saw the codes to text/sms that you see at bus stops i.e. "text this for next bus"

    Thanks
    Jas

Great overview of Oxford API project! Thanks to Dave King for coming all the way from Oxford.
A quick bit of research on google shows that the 'City API' concept is gaining ground in various countries around the world. Here in the UK the 'Future Cities' SIG of the Technology Strategy Board has been active in promoting events, such as:

    http://futureeverything.org/events/city-api/

So there is a great deal we can learn from what other people have been doing.

Looking forward the next gig in June/July. Until then, thanks to Sam for organising this informative event.

Boo! Will be in Reading until 5, then a couple of hours to get home. Will you be videoing?

    April 2, 2014

    • Sam Z.

Hi Jez, unfortunately we won't be videoing the event this time. We're round the corner from Brighton station, so if you fancy joining a little later for a beer then come and find us at the Fusebox.
