Big Data in Academia

Happy new year everyone!

I'm delighted to be able to announce our next meetup will be on Thursday 31st January.

Fresh from his inaugural lecture at the University of Brighton, Professor Miltos Petridis (Head of the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics) will be among other speakers from Academia.

Hope to see you there...remember to RSVP early to avoid disappointment

Sam

*EDIT* Go in the main entrance on Grand Parade and ask for the Boardroom

Alas, for me, this meetup didn't address my interest in big data - interrogating big data sets, rather than how to manage them.

That sounds interesting to me. Interrogation techniques to discern meaningful info from big data sets - in my case, 400 x 3,500 spreadsheet (OK, not TB; not even GB; but big for me).

I found 2 or perhaps 3 of last night's talks directly interesting, although I'd say most of them were quite tangential to what I'd call Big Data (processing, storing and querying multi-Terabytes).

I'd personally like to hear more about anyone's real uses of such datasets. The twitter trend talk was probably the closest, although I suspect the dataset size wasn't /that/ Big.

Liked the venue, and networking chat is useful.

Well I thought it all went rather well. The feed back I got was positive and we'll definitely do another one as we have a lot more to offer in the way of content! Looking forward to everyones' key learnings!

Gutted to be missing tonight due to client work in Austria - looks like the makings of our best meet-up yet! Enjoy :-)

    Hi
Looks like a good one. Are you planning to end at 7ish? I'd forgotten my partner/wife/lover was out that night.

    Hi,

Am I too late to come along tomorrow night?

Sorry, I only just found you!

    Cheers,

    Dear all
Really looking forward to meeting/seeing you all again tomorrow evening and welcoming you to the University - we have a good line-up, some good food and some good wine (I think someone may also be bringing some beers?) - we just need your good company to make it complete. Doors will be open from 17:45 - just come to the main entrance at Grand Parade and ask for directions to the Boardroom!
