My background is in the mobile phone sector, so I have strong interest in location based services. I am interested in the kinds of information that could potentially be mined from such large data sets and the patterns of behaviour which it could reveal. Google for 'reality mining' if you would like to find out more. Combine this data with the potentially massive amounts of data that could be gleaned from static sensors in the environment and social media feeds, then you could build up a very interesting picture of what is REALLY going on in the urban environment. Of course, these massive data sets would need to be stored in the Cloud and processed using technologies such as Hadoop and NOSQL databases.
I am very interested in "The Internet of Things". This will produce huge volumes of data, most of which is likely to end up in the Cloud. The is where "Big Data" analytics comes in.
Already looking forward to the next meetup! Let's turn Brighton into a hub of excellence for Big Data research and practice.
