Please tell us about yourself.

Looks like I covered that in the introduction, although happy to add more detail or a CV if anyone's interested!

What Big Data technologies are you most passionate about and why?

So I have a big interest in Machine Learning, for which Hadoop and Mahout are perhaps the default open source choices at scale, although some other things on my radar: Interested in http://graphlab.org/ as a way to parallelise algorithms where the dataflow and scheduling is slightly more complex than the usual MapReduce use cases. Yahoo's Vowpal Wabbit, despite the awful name, is a great tool for scalable online learning. For smaller-to-mid-scale stuff, I like a Python-based numpy/scipy stack with a bit of Cython for speed. Also R for the great range of stats libraries. I've also played with a few NoSQL databases in the course of more traditional web engineering efforts; Redis in particular I liked for a bunch of use cases, although plain old MySQL or Postgres have been common choices too. For me it's more about picking the tool for the job so I can move on to do smart things with the data, less about fetishising the infrastructure itself, much as it can be fun to hack on.

Please tell us what interests you have in Big Data?
