2014 New York Five Boro Bike Tour

Whether you're a newbie to biking or an experienced power rider, the 40+ mile New York Five Boro Bike Tour offers an opportunity to celebrate urban biking and challenge your longer-ride endurance.

Five Boro Bike Tour regular registration will be each riders responsibility. The Tour organizers at Bike New York have set up a "rush" registration process starting on January 14 at 12:00pm (noon) EST. This first-come, first-served registration system is expected to sell out in just a few hours. If you want to ride in the May event you MUST register as soon as possible after noon on January 14. The regular registration fee is $90.

For registration details, visit the Bike New York Registration Page at http://www.bikenewyork.org/ride/five-boro-bike-tour/.

We will organize a meet up at the JFK Boardwalk Parking Area, on Staten Island, where experienced and newcomer tour participants can ride to the Staten Island Ferry and the start of the Tour.

Join us for this exciting shared challenge. Big Weekend Adventures will also arrange warm-up rides beginning in March to help everyone prepare for this event.

Watch for updates in the coming days and weeks as we approach the registration dates and beyond. More details will be provided.

Hey Ray, sorry we couldn't hook up at the end. There was no way I could have spotted your beautiful feather boa! Anyway, it was a great ride and thanks so much for organizing the event.

Ray, did you see your nice pic on marathon photo?. I think Amit was in it too. But geez, its $30 per picture...that's very steep.

      May 6, 2014

    • Ray F.

I agree... $30 is more than I want to pay for that photo. In the past they've captured four or five pictures along the route. I still have never purchased any of them.

Ray, I'm sorry we didn't get to hookl up. My son and I though had a great time and thanks for the alternate route. I think it worked out great. We finally finished the tour around 4pm I think. I had Endomondo running but my phone died right before i hit the Verazzano.

We liked the bypass except for the ride up 59th street. That is a very steep incline. Columbus circle wasn't so bad though.

      1 · May 5, 2014

    • Ray F.

That's a tough area. The map shows a 60-foot climb in less than 1/2 mile. Slow and steady isn't easy on busy city streets.

      May 5, 2014

  • Jenene

This was as really great experience. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I was on the look out for your group but didn't see you. It's easy to not find people in a sea of almost 40,000 cyclist.

    • Ray F.

Jenene... Congrats on your first FBT! Let's do some more NYC rides. They're especially fun without 40,000 other riders. ;)

hi ray, is there any way to bypass having to pickup the packet 2 days prior? anyway to pickup day of? looking forward to meeting everyone. by the way, this is my first time. In case, i cannot find you guys, i can go ride on my own but is the entire route pretty clearly marked? i just follow the crowd and wont get lost right?

Eva... We'll be arriving at the Manhattan side of the Staten Island Ferry at 8:15. That's where you'll meet us, right?

Ray, I've been talking with my son and after seeing some videos from last year and how many people are in the beginning he has finally decided that it would be a good idea to not try to go through the whole ride from the beginning. I see that the RSVP is closed but I just want to know if there would be a problem joining the group.

We'll meet you in Staten Island at 8:15.

Scott... By 8:15 we hope to be arriving in Battery Park, Manhattan. If you meet us at the South Beach parking area on Staten Island we will be there around 6:30 and will leave by 6:45. If you meet us on the Staten Island side of the ferry, we will be getting there around 7:15 and leaving on the ferry by 7:30. See the ride page at http://www.bigweekend... for full details on meetup points. Text me at[masked] with updates.

Hi Ray, I know I don't think I RSVP'd to this event, but I'll be there. I'll meet you at Cahoots. I can drive some people if needed. Not sure if my bike rack works on the mini van. I'll have to try it. See you in High Bridge tomorrow!

We're one week away from this year's NY Five Boro Tour! If you have not already determined where you'll meet up with our group, please find the three optional meetup locations and times on my Web page: http://goo.gl/NQEhso We will be leaving each of the three meetup locations promptly and cannot wait for you if you arrive late. At each spot, you'll recognize me by the blue and green boa hanging from my helmet. Text me at[masked] to update me on your arrival or to get my location. You should have received your rider number from Bike New York. That will help you pick up your rider packet at the New York Bike Expo on Friday or Saturday. For more info on Packet Pickup, see this Bike New York Web page: http://goo.gl/TL5t30 You should also have received an e-mail about limitations on backpacks and bags during the ride. This Web page offers a helpful video on what you can and cannot bring: http://goo.gl/Pqb2K0 See you next week!

Just want to throw this out there. My son finally said he wanted to do the tour. Went to register but they were sold out. Went to one of the charities and as long as he agrees to raise money for them he is in. If anyone still wants to ride try looking into the charities to see if you can ride for them. All you have to do is raise money for them which is not a bad thing.

Hey Ray, wanted to recommend that everyone use fat tire bikes the streets are not very road bike friendly as per bikenyc. I look forward to the March prep rides.

Sounds great!!!! As far as the grouping we don't do that per your posts below, is that correct?

      February 20, 2014

    • Scott T

Ray never mind my question. I actually took the time to read the whole post so I will see you at the start location in SI. Looking forward to some warm up rides begining sometime in March.

      February 20, 2014

  • Eva

Hey Ray, received the email from TD bike tour about grouping. Are we doing that? and by the way, since I'm from queens, I'll meet up the group at the starting line instead of your designated point in SI. Would that be a problem?

    1 · February 12, 2014

    • Ray F.

I will provide more details in the next few weeks. I would recommend that you meet up with us at Battery Park.

Ok thanks Ray.sounds good and I'll wait for your further details.

Hi, I'm new to the group. As I said in my intro, I'm getting back on my bike after being unable to ride for a couple of years... Signing up for the 5 Boro will be a good incentive to get me off my rear end, to spin classes. :) I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

Hi everyone, finally I find a group I can ride the tour with! This will be my first time and I'm very excited. I hope I'll get a chance to meet everyone before the tour.

I just registered today (1/19). I was a bit surprised that it had not filled up yet. I guess I got lucky because last year when I tried it was all sold out.
