Join us on Saturday, August 9th for a view of Philadelphia you may not have seen before. We’ll ride a 23-mile mixed trail and road route along the Schuylkill River and the Wissahickon Creek. You’ll want to bring a mountain bike or a hybrid for this ride, since about half of our 23 miles will be on gravel trails.
We’ll start and end at the Rocky Statue in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and head up the Schuylkill River along Kelly Drive. We’ll pass Boathouse Row, see the rowing facilities, and go under the some impressive road and rail bridges.
About five miles into the ride we’ll turn right to follow the Wissahickon Creek trail for six miles into a rich wooded valley. We’ll have a remarkable perspective on the Henry Avenue Arch Bridge and will probably see a dozen or more travelers on horseback. Don’t be surprised when we encounter the quaint Valley Green trailside restaurant.
At 9 miles we begin a 300-foot, 2.5-mile climb that will take us back to a road ride through the neighborhoods of Northwest Philly’s Roxborough section. After a nice downhill glide gives us our 300 feet back we’ll move back onto the Schuylkill River Trail heading downstream toward Manayunk and Center City Philadelphia.
At mile 19 we’ll cross the Falls Bridge to follow the Schuylkill Trail through West Fairmount Park. We’ll pass the waterworks and have more beautiful views of the river, including a perfect view of Boathouse Row from across the Schuylkill River. The ride ends when we cross the river back to the Museum of Art. Before you leave, be sure to snap a proud photo with your bike in front of the Rocky Statue.
After the ride, we’ll have an optional meetup at a local pub to compare thoughts on our 23-mile accomplishment. And get this… We NEVER left the city of Philadelphia.
Bring your mountain bike or hybrid and enjoy this challenging ride with us.
Here’s a map of the ride, including an elevation profile. Stay tuned for information on parking.
