Long Branch / Sandy Hook 28-mile Beachfront Ride

Here’s a long and breezy, flat and easy ride to celebrate summer at the Jersey Shore. We begin at the train station in Long Branch, where we’ll ride three blocks to the beach. From there we’ll cruise north on Ocean Avenue, taking paved bike trails wherever possible through the towns of Monmouth Beach and Sea Bright.

We’ll enter Sandy Hook park at mile 7.5, but won’t reach the tip until mile 14. Along the way we’ll ride a combination of park roads and bike trails, taking in both ocean and bayside views. There will be plenty of opportunities to take pictures of wildlife and historic buildings within this former military base.

We’ll head back along the seaside route to Long Branch, where we’ll find a good spot for a lunch break.  Those who are up for a swim will have the rest of the day to buy a day pass at Long Branch.

The entire 28-mile ride will never rise more than 33 feet above sea level.

Join us for a Sunday ride in the fresh salt air.

Initially I couldn't make it because I was out late the night before, ended up taking my dad to the ER at 7:30 a.m. He's OK.

Killah ride Ray!!! Paul p clocked me @ 17mph on the fatty (with only 9 speeds 18 or 27 would have nice for more speed)...Oh for another chain ring my life would be complete sound barriers would have been broken! all rode Fantastic! But Nelson Flew on his single speed, so I have nothing to brag about!

    2 · August 24

    • Elisabeth

At the speeds you maintained on those 4" fatties, you must have killah quads. Must have been nice to pedal through the sand when we got to the tip of Sandy Hook!

    2 · August 24

    • Elisabeth

Could you please post a link to your MapMyRide route, Natalie. Thanks.

Here you go -- http://www.mapmyride.... -- weird my front page reads 28.12mi but my actual route reads 28.11mi, so I was off by .01 in total miles.

It was a fun ride with some interesting people. they did not mind my bursts of speed. Or was I just to far ahead to hear it.

    4 · August 24

    • Natalie

I'll just remember you two as the recumbent speed duo! Very nice meeting you. Recumbent would probably take a huge load off my 2 herniated disks. Some day when I work up my endurance/stamina again

And thanks for letting me lead within Sandy Hook, now that you've got your photo ops we can ride through again. Just let me know, we can all take a tour too. I've got a season pass good through Labor Day.

    3 · August 24

Oops correction, season pass to park only if we drive into the Hook and then ride through and out to Long Branch.

    Rey,
Thanks for the info and the suggestion of plan B :-) I will try the 20+ miles on the HenryHudson this weekend.

    1 · August 22

    • Ray F.

Raghu... Can you provide a link to the Henry Hudson ride... if it's an organized ride? That way others who are looking for something shorter can opt for that one. Thanks.

      August 23

    • Avinash K.

Hi Ray, I did the Henry Hudson Trail on Tue 8/19. I rode from the parking in Aberdeen off GSP Exit 117 (Hazlet) The trail is closed off at Atlantic Highlands due to unsafe conditions and had to take town roads to Sandy Hook. It is a nice trail, mostly shaded, too. Longer, 20 miles each way to Sandy Hook and back. May plan a future ride on the HH Trail.

      1 · August 23

  • Rita

The ride sounds great. The longest ride I have been on is 17 miles. What is plan B?
    Thanks

    1 · August 22

    • Ray F.

Hi Rita... This should be a bit easier than most rides because it's almost completely flat. The only plan B is to recognize that you won't make the entire round trip early enough to turn around and head back to Long Branch. If you were to turn back as we entered Sandy Hook you'll have a ride that's close to your 17-miler.

      August 23

Thanks Avinash. I copied the map from Google maps. See you Sun.

Is there a way to download the map and directions without joining Map My Ride? Also I have a friend who would like to join us.

    1 · August 20

    • Natalie

Ray, if you have Snipping Tool, you can snip the sections and drop into word then convert to PDF. I don't have Photoshop so use this method often.

    • Avinash K.

I find mapmyride and its sister sites mapmyrun and mapmywalk very useful to measure and track my activities. Lately, they are also sending a code to enjoy 1-month premium for free. The free level is quite useful and I suggest all to join without any reservations. For printing, google maps or yahoo maps may allow to create a printable route. Here is a shareable map from Google Maps. https://www.google.com...

      1 · August 20

  • Raghu G.

Is there any age limit for kids? And is there any time limit for this ride?

    1 · August 18

    • Ray F.

Raghu... It depends greatly on the activity levels the young rider is used to. We have had parents bring 14 and 15 year olds who have done well. Others have had their 16 or 17 year olds who want out midway through a ride. If the rider is familiar with rides of 20+ miles and is used to athletic challenges, they should be fine. You may also want to have a plan B. ;) See you out there!

      August 19

    • Ray F.

I expect that the ride alone will be at least 3 hours. Anything after that will be optional.

      August 19

  • Beth K.

Work plans changed , I am in, again. Looking forward to it.

  • Natalie

Since the restaurant is closed still, there are several food trucks available at that parking lot. Plus they also have water fountains if you need to fill up your water bottles. I cycle there often. Also, you may want to find out if everyone needs to buy (or bring if you already have one) a pass to enter the park during season.

Brook, Yes a Mtb will work fine! I have done this ride on a MTB(This ride I will be Sporting a "Fat Tire" mtb) (4"tires) just for the fun of it.

      1 · August 15

  • Avinash K.

After the last hurricane, the only restaurant on Sandy Hook is closed. So, do bring your own snack/lunch and water - at least 1 quart. I may hang back for some beach time before returning. Sandy Hook is a federal recreation area and there is no restriction on alcoholic beverages, too. But, you do need to be able to ride back 14 miles and drive.
