"The Great Alpaca Round-Up" at Tomhannock Reservoir

Not to be missed is the ride we call our "Great Alpaca Round-Up". It's 15 miles of riding bliss along the Tomhannock Reservoir. The water source for the City of Troy, NY is the Tomhannock Reservoir, a man made reservoir 6 ½ miles northeast of the City. The reservoir is 5 ½ miles long and holds 12.3 billion gallons when full. We will be traveling on the east side of the reservoir. This is a relatively flat route with only a couple of moderate hills. Our friends at the Otter Creek Alpaca Farm will give us a guided tour of their farm and allow us an up close experience with their fine animals. Yes, they do have a gift shop for all of your Alpaca needs. Who doesn't need some nice warm socks? This picturesque route will be an out and back, so the return trip will have the reservoir on your right side.

This is always one of our most talked about rides and full of surprises!

Group members only please. As always call (518)[masked] or email bikebarncycles@gmail with any questions.

You can either meetup at Bike Barn Cycles in Cohoes at 8:00am or at the ride starting point (Tomhannock Reservoir parking lot) at 8:30am.

I'm taking my mountain bike just to keep it at a relaxed pace. For those that have asked about hills, yes there are two moderate ones but there is no rush. We'll wait for walkers. I'm looking forward to the peacefulness of the reservoir and enjoying the day with everyone.

I might have tried this ride, but, to be perfectly honest, cycling with more than 20 people seems a bit too much for me. Would welcome hearing some other views on this.

Okay, you both have convinced me, but not this time. I'll be on a Hiking Mates bike ride in VT this Saturday, and I have a softball game that same Sunday afternoon. So I'll aim for another Bike Barn ride soon, although this ride Sunday does sound very nice. Have fun.

I'm with Kathie, my pace often leaves me one with the trees and the wildlife.

I really want to do this ride but have to be in Albany by noon. We should be done well before then, right? I'm just getting back into riding so I'm still a behind-the-peloton person, especially on the hills :) :) So I'm thinking 8.30 departure, 15 miles round trip should work. Am I right in assuming that the farm tour is at the end?

I have been receiving messages about this group's rides. It is safe to assume that I'm a member? I haven't been able to join the group yet Sunday's ride sounds interesting.

This ride sounds great! Approximately what time do you think this will end? I unfortunately have something in the afternoon so I am not sure if I will have enough time :(

This ride is mainly an adult ride since it is done on the road. Some of the road sections have very little shoulder. There are also a couple of decent hills over the course of 15 miles. Please keep this in mind when evaluating your childs cycling skills. Parents who would like to bring their child on a bike attachment such as a baby seat or tag-a-long are encouraged to do so. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me directly at the bike shop. (518) 238-2453. Thanks.

Do any children go on this ride? or is it just adults?

This is a relaxed pace ride typically not exceeding a 15mph average in front. We do have riders who will be around an 11-12mph average pace towards the back. We don't do cue sheets because there is a designated leader and a sweeper. Our leaders want to make sure that everyone is having a good time and that they stay safe. The group will take breaks from time to time and wait for everyone to catch up regardless of their pace. If you don't like to wait around socializing at times and you just want to ride non-stop then this group probably isn't for you. We are basically as the title implies, a beginner to moderate cycling group. We like to have fun while enjoying the scenery and getting some exercise. I just wanted to put this out there as we start to think about the upcoming season. Lets get ready to ride!
