The 3rd Annual Wine Tasting and Cycling Tour at Dry Mill Vineyards & Winery!

***IMPORTANT UPDATE***

The meet time for ride C (40 mi) has been changed to 8:30 a.m.  The meet time for rides A & B remain at 9:30 a.m.

The Ride

Enjoy views of scenice countryside, horse farms, estate homes, and tree coverd bike trails on this ride between Leesburg and Purcellville, VA.  To better accomodate our members varied riding needs, three different route options are available.  All three rides start and end from the same location and are no drop.  Cue sheets will be available.

Ride A:

Distance: 19.9 miles

Terrain: Mostly flat with some hills

Elevation: 968 ft

Max Grade: 6.9%

Surface: Paved bike trail and roads (W&OD with a couple short segements on two lane road)

Approx pedaling time: 1.5 - 2 hours (based on a pace between 10 - 15 mph)

Appropriate Bicycle Type(s): Any

Traffic & hazards: Light traffic on roads; runners & pedestrians on the W&OD Trail

Route: Includes Dry Mill Rd and W&OD Trail.

Map for Ride A

Comments: This is a relatively flat route, 16 miles of which are along the tree shaded W&OD Trail and about 3 miles on Dry Mill Rd.  There will be two or three short climbs and a very fun down hill run for the last 2 miles of the ride.

Ride B:

Distance: 23.5 miles

Terrain: Rolling hills, to hilly, but also long flat segments

Elevation: 1489 ft

Max Grade: 8.6%

Surface: Paved rural two-lane roads and bike trails

Approx pedaling time: 1.5 - 2 hours (based on a pace between 12 - 16 mph)

Appropriate Bicycle Type(s): Road, cyclocross, hybrid (if you are in very good shape)

Traffic & hazards: Light traffic on roads; runners & pedestrians on the W&OD Trail

Route: Includes Dry Mill Rd, Woodburn Rd, HarmonyChurch Rd, and W&OD Trail.

Map for Ride B

Comments: This is a slightly longer, but much hillier ride and is intended for those who want a more vigorous workout and/or want to work on improving the hill climbing ability.  There is a steep (8.6% grade ) 2 mile climb early in the ride, followed by 2.5 miles of rolling hills along Harmony Church Rd following that.  The second half of the ride is mostly along the flat and shady W&OD Trail and end with the fun 2 mile downhill run on Dry Mill Rd.

Ride C:

Distance: 39.8 miles

Terrain: Rolling hills, to hilly, but also some long flat segments

Elevation: 2965 ft

Max Grade: 9.6%

Surface: Paved rural two-lane roads and bike trails

Approx pedaling time: 2.5 - 3.5 hours (based on a pace between 12 - 16 mph)

Appropriate Bicycle Type(s): Road, cyclocross, hybrid (if you are in very, very good shape)

Traffic & hazards: Light traffic on roads; runners & pedestrians on the W&OD Trail

Route: Includes Dry Mill Rd, Woodburn Rd, HarmonyChurch Rd, Snickersville Turnpike, Silcott Springs Rd, and the W&OD Trail.

Map for Ride C

Comments: This is a longer, and much, much hillier version of Ride B and is intended for those who are preparing for the century rides (Covered Bridge or Reston) coming up in August, or just want a good challenge.  The route includes everything in Ride B but adds some of the segments from the Horse Hills ride we did recently.

After the Ride

After the ride we'll enjoy an afternoon picnicking and wine tasting at Dry Mill Vineyards & Winery.  Seating is available both indoors and out.  Dry Mill offers a variety of award wining white, red and desert wines which you may sample and or purchase.  Also available for purchase are a variety of cheeses, crackers, breads, meats and smoked fish.  Prices for the food offerings range between $3 and $10.  Bottles of wine range between $17.00 & $22.00. Great. My first time on the route and it was a good day. Spent most of my time in the back but it gave me lots of time to sightsee the countryside. Hills. All I really want are hills.
In the morning I want hills.
In the evening I want hills.

It was a great day and much fun! The rides were challenging, especially those on Woodburn, Harmony Church, Snickersville Turnpike, and Sillcot Springs roads, but what great workout! The sun came out just in time to warm us up for the picnic at the winery. It was a pleasure spending the day with all of you. Thanks coming out!

Great fun! Good pace with safe riders. Lots of rolling hills made it challenging. Felt drained at the end of the ride, but a few glasses of wine and some cheese brought me back. Looking forward to more Bike Me rides.

    May 3, 2013

    • John

Jeane - It's hard to get an accurate count, but it appears there will be 15 - 20 people in both groups A & B. You will have plenty of company no matter which group ride you choose.

If anyone is interested, I have a perfectly functioning Cateye Strada wired bike computer looking for a new handlebar or stem to call home. Includes computer, wired sensor, wheel magnet, mount and instructions. First person to pour me a glass of red wine gets to take it home. :-)

Actually, my specialized battery was low and it died when I replaced the battery. Just put a planet bike computer on and it's not working very well either. I'll hook you up with a glass of red wine. :)

Oh my goodness!! I did create quite a reputation from last year. If I do ride C, my grand total for the day would 80 miles. It's still early in the season. Let's do this ride again later in the season! I will do ride C then. :)
