Kenton to Berkhamsted (55 miles, intermediate level)

Please join us for a scenic ride from Kenton to Berkhamsted along some Picturesque country lanes in Hertfordshire and the Chilterns.

The Chilterns stretch from the River Thames in Oxfordshire to Hitchin in Hertfordshire and are nationally-protected as some of the finest countryside in the UK. They're a fantastic place to explore all year round.

This event is for Road bikes, CycloCross bikes or Hybrid bikes (without suspension) with slick, slim tyres (less than 32mm) only, do not put your name down unless you own one of these bikes.

Here is the plan for our day:

1) Meet outside Kenton Overground Station

2) Cycle to Berkhamsted via Northwood, Rickmansworth and Chesham

3) Lunch in Berkhamsted  at approx 12.30pm

4) Cycle back to Kenton via the same route.

Our average cycling speed will be approx 13 mph, which translates as approx 16-20mph on flat roads and approx 7-9 mph up hills.

No one will be left behind, however if you are struggling to keep up then we will point you in the direction of the nearest station.

Helmets, lights and a spare inner tube will be compulsory. Every week someone has a puncture.

In terms of difficulty from (1-5(hardest)), we would categorise this ride as difficulty level 3.5.

The total mileage including the lunch stop will be approx 55 miles. This is quite a hilly route, so you should be able to cycle up Cat 5 hills.

PLEASE READ THE SPEED DESCRIPTIONS CAREFULLY, PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP UNLESS YOU CAN MAINTAIN THE DESCRIBED SPEEDS. IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO KEEP UP WE WILL KINDLY ASK YOU TO BAIL OUT, WE WILL POINT YOU IN THE DIRECTION OF THE NEAREST STATION.

For those cyclists who do not wish to do the whole route there will be a few train stations along the route, so if you wish to join us for part of the ride and then take the train back en route you are welcome to.

This meetup will be weather dependent so 12 hours before the event begins if heavy rain is forecast then the event will be cancelled, please check the website the evening before the event begins.

If you are not sure that you will be able to cope with the speed and the distance please email Suki for some advice.

Please do not put your name down unless you are serious about attending. If you repeatedly put your name down for rides and then pull out or don't show, you will automatically be put on the waiting list for future rides.

Priority will be given to cyclists who have a high RSVP to attendance ratio.

If I could navigate my way out of a paper bag, I'd have no hesitation in choosing a watering hole as my destination!

You're more than welcome Eva :-). Richard and me finally managed to get back after the stupid Apple Map directed us to A41 and M25. Thanks for your and Clair's concerns.

Fast(ish) but rubbish navigators! I think we went round in circles for a couple of hours before we got going in the right direction! By complete coincidence (in the way that can only happen on Bikalicious rides), we found Jo and Andy in the Beefeater opposite Kenton station! We both got back safely thanks. Good to see you all. Thanks again to Suki for a most enjoyable day.

Suki, I am really sorry that I got to cancelled it again as I got puncture while I was riding to Kenton form slough. (Public transport takes 2.5 hours to get to Kenton from slough) Please don't penalise heavily on my last minute cancelation. Thanks, sen.

Your critical analysis of our rides is wasted on us, you should try applying your skills with another group where they would be better appreciated :-)
