Kew to Amersham (55 miles, intermediate level)

Please join us for ride to Amersham in the Chilterns.

The Chilterns stretch from the River Thames in Oxfordshire to Hitchin in Hertfordshire and are nationally-protected as some of the finest countryside in the UK. They're a fantastic place to explore all year round.

This event is for Road bikes, CycloCross bikes or Hybrid bikes (without suspension) with slick, slim tyres ( 28mm or less ) only, do not put your name down unless you own one of these bikes, with the specified tyre widths.

We welcome cyclists who feel they have progressed beyond beginners level and wish to set themselves a challenge of reaching a higher level.

Here is the plan for our day:

1) Meet outside Kew Gardens station (main entrance)

2) Cycle to Amersham  via; Ealing, Perivale, South Harrow, Ruislip and Harefield,

3) Lunch in a nice country pub near Amersham

4) Cycle back to Kew via the same route

Our average cycling speed will be approx 13 mph, which translates as approx 16-20mph on flat roads and approx 7-9 mph up hills.

No one will be left behind, however if you are struggling to keep up then we will talk to you about how you are feeling and if necessary give you directions to the nearest station.

Helmets, lights and a spare inner tube will be compulsory. Every week someone has a puncture.

In terms of difficulty from (1-5(hardest)), we would categorise this ride as difficulty level 4

The total mileage including the lunch stop will be approx 55 miles. This is quite hilly route with a total of 1700ft of climbing, there is 1 cat 3 climb which last for 7 miles!!!

PLEASE READ THE SPEED DESCRIPTIONS CAREFULLY, PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP UNLESS YOU CAN MAINTAIN THE DESCRIBED SPEEDS. IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO KEEP UP WE WILL TALK WITH YOU AND IF NECESSARY KINDLY ASK YOU TO BAIL OUT, WE WILL GIVE YOU DIRECTIONS TO THE NEAREST STATION.

For those cyclists who do not wish to do the whole route there will be a few train stations along the route, so if you wish to join us for part of the ride and then take the train back en route you are welcome to.

This meetup will be weather dependent so 12 hours before the event begins if heavy rain is forecast then the event will be cancelled, please check the website the evening before the event begins.

If you are not sure that you will be able to cope with the speed and the distance please email Suki for some advice.

Please do not put your name down unless you are serious about attending. If you repeatedly put your name down for rides and then pull out or don't show, you will automatically be put on the waiting list for future rides.

Priority will be given to cyclists who have a high RSVP to attendance ratio.

It's only puddles that cause punctures, Martin. Heavy rain just washes all those sharp objects out the way! Just wish I'd brought my shampoo!

All good fun. We got lost and then abandoned the race just before the 'flood'. Did anyone carelessly ride on it and get a puncture? ;)

A most enjoyable day - especially the rain at the end, as I was keen to test whether my new jacket was waterproof. It is! (Unfortunately, my bib longs are not...). Good to see you all!

What's the name of the hill Suki?

      January 14, 2014

    • Suki

Hi Emma, don't think it has a name, my routing software classifies it as a cat 3, it starts from chalfont st Giles all the way to amersham, it's not very steep, not like what you are used to, it's just very long.

Hi Suki, is there a chance of getting a GPX file of the route as I might tail off around Ealing?

    January 14, 2014

    • Suki

Hi Alex, GPx file has not been finalized yet, it won't be ready till day before the ride, any further questions about the route please email me, you are welcome to join at a pre-agreed meeting point and also leave the route on the way back.

    • Suki

Hi Shauna, don't worry the hill is gradual, not that steep, just long, you will be fine, I'm sure :-)
