An area of outstanding natural beauty, The Chiltern Hills stretch from the River Thames in Oxfordshire to Hitchin in Hertfordshire and are nationally-protected as some of the finest countryside in the UK.
Henley-on-Thames is a pretty riverside market town on one of the most beautiful stretches of the River Thames, in gently wooded, rolling countryside. Henley is often known because of its links to rowing through the Henley Royal Regatta.
Here is the plan for our day ;
1) take 9.25am train from Marylebone station, if you wish to purchase your own train ticket please email me so i can add your name to the ride list.
2) arrive at Princes Risborough station at 10.10am, cycle to Henley along beautiful, picturesque country lanes. We will not be cycling into Henley along the horrible main road, we will go via a very beautiful road alongside the river.
3) lunch in Henley on Thames at approx[masked]pm (1 hour)
4) Cycle back to Princess Risborough via a different route.
5) take 5pm train back to Marylebone arriving back at 5.45pm.
This event is for Road bikes, CycloCross bikes or Hybrid bikes (without suspension) with slick, slim tyres ( 28mm or less ) only, do not put your name down unless you own one of these bikes, with the specified tyre widths.
We welcome cyclists who feel they have progressed beyond beginners level and wish to set themselves a challenge of reaching a higher level. However please carefully read the speed descriptions below, these are pretty accurate.
Our average cycling speed will be approx 12mph, which translates as approx 16-20mph on flat roads and approx 7-9 mph up hills.
The total mileage including the lunch stop will be approx 50 miles. The Chilterns are very hilly so you should be prepared to cycle up lots of hills. There will be 4 cat 5 climbs and 1 cat 4 climb, with total climbing of 3000ft !!!
In terms of difficulty from (1-5(hardest)), we would categorise this ride as difficulty level 7.
The cost for Return train tickets is normally £19.70, with group discount we get them for £15 ( which includes paypal and meetup fees).
No one will be left behind, however if you are struggling to keep up then we will talk to you about how you are feeling and if necessary give you directions to the nearest station.
Helmets, lights and a spare inner tube will be compulsory. Every week someone has a puncture.
Locks are optional, if you wish to bring one, it may provide you with some peace of mind, when we have lunch.
If this event if cancelled then full refunds will be given.
This meetup will be weather dependent so 12 hours before the event begins if heavy rain is forecast then the event will be cancelled, please check the website the evening before the event begins.
If you are not sure that you will be able to cope with the speed and the distance please email Suki for some advice.
Please do not put your name down unless you are serious about attending. If you repeatedly put your name down for rides and then pull out or don't show, you will automatically be put on the waiting list for future rides.
