Hike the Deer Park Trail to the Lagoon, Bass Pond & Gardens
Saturday, August 3 - Meet at 9:30 a.m. in front of the restrooms at the Conservatory.
Suggested Parking: Near the Conservatory/A Gardener’s Place Shop
When driving toward Biltmore House, you can turn on your emergency flashers when approaching the parking attendants to be directed past the House and through the Walled Garden, and then park in either the paved or gravel lot beside the Gardner’s Place shop. Walk up the stairs and then go left to find the restrooms.
After meeting at 9:30 and doing introductions, we’ll wind through the Conservatory and Walled, Shrub and Italian Gardens before walking up to the South Terrace and heading out on the Deer Park Trail. We’ll go to the Lagoon (feel free to bring bread to feed the geese), turn around and come back toward the House and head down to the Bass Pond and stop for lunch at either the waterfall or the Boat House. We’ll then meander through the Azalea Garden before ending our hike in the Walled Garden in front of the Conservatory.
Trail Length: about 4.1 miles – we’ll keep a somewhat steady pace, stopping for a few breaks and photo opps along the way
Difficulty: Easy/moderate with a few uphill sections and/or stairs
Net Elevation Change: 233 ft.
Time Estimate: Approx. 3 hours
Bring: Appropriate footwear, water, lunch, sunscreen, and camera
Pups: Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome.
Afterwards: If anyone in the group wants, we can head over to the Stable Courtyard and get ice cream and/or browse the shops. The Meetup officially ends after the hike, but there’s always something more to do at Biltmore. (But… you already knew that!)
If there’s enough interest, we may repeat this hike quarterly so that we can see and photograph the seasonal changes in fall, winter and spring.
See you there!
