UPDATE: Thank you, Sheila, for commenting about the restriction after 5:00. I spoke to a Biltmore representative and ONLY PASSHOLDERS can turn left towards the House after 5:00 p.m. If you have a guest in your car that is not a passholder, you can only go to the right/Antler Hill Village area. So, since we are meeting at the Conservatory, no non-passholder guests are allowed on this hike. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
My hiking buddy, Susan, and I recently scouted out a new after work hike and think you're going to like it! We'll do about 4 miles at a fairly brisk pace. Plan to arrive BY 5:45 to do brief introductions and leave at 5:50 so that we don't run out of daylight. I anticipate we will finish right around 7:30 p.m. I'm not going to give a bunch of details, but know that we'll see lots of sights and hit the gardens, bass pond, waterfall, skirt by the House and meet the statue of Diana up close and personal.
Difficulty: Moderate with a few steep uphill sections and/or stairs
Net Elevation Change: 433 ft.
Let's meet at the restrooms next to the Conservatory. Suggested parking is in the lot by the Conservatory/A Gardener’s Place Shop.
After arriving at the gate and showing your pass, tell the attendant you want to turn left towards Biltmore House. If the gate is down, he/she will open it. Drive past the regular parking areas and the House and continue through the Walled Garden. Park in the paved lot beside the Gardner’s Place shop. Walk up the stairs and then go left to find the restrooms. (Note - they will probably not be open.)
I would rate this as a moderate hike with quite a few inclines on the steep or consistent side... certainly tougher than our previous after-work hikes, but not really strenuous. We'll be going fairly fast, therefore, please make sure you're used to hiking before signing up.
Before you RSVP, please make sure you can go. No-shows or last minute cancellations sometimes keep people on waiting lists from being able to attend Meetups. Also, please note that our group will start and end together... thanks in advance for not requesting to break away before we finish.
Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome.
If anyone is interested, we can go to The Cantina in Biltmore Village afterwards for dinner and/or drinks.
The weather forecast for Wednesday looks good as of Sunday afternoon. Looking forward to hiking with those of you who can make it on Wednesday!
