We will teach you what you need to know to do a small biotech project of your own or introduce you to basic techniques we “lab rats” use during the day!
This class is the second part of a class offered consecutive Saturdays.

This class will introduce you to PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction).
PCR is a fundamental technique of modern biotechnology - developed here in
the Bay Area by Nobel Laureate Kary Mullis. You will have the opportunity to run and analyze your own genomic DNA using standard PCR techniques. You will be looking at your genotype for an ALU element. The study of ALU elements has allowed us to understand evolution and the inheritance of specific populations.
This class will introduce you to PCR Applications including: DNA fingerprinting, diagnostic medicine, genome mapping, and evolutionary relationship determination! No prior experience is necessary. We will teach you the required techniques and necessary background during the class!
This class includes:
* Reagents for isolating your individual DNA, performing PCR and analysis of your PCR products
* Handouts of Presentation Slides, Key Concepts from lectures and “How To” Protocol Steps
* Lecture and lab on PCR Reaction Components and Technology, Agarose Gel Electrophoresis, and Analysis of PCR Products
* Introduction to PCR Applications, Primer Design, PCR Variations and PCR Optimization

Prerequisite: In order to attend Part 2, you must have attended Introduction to PCR Part 1

Class fee: $100 for Part 1 & Part 2 (8 hours). Limited to the first 24 to sign up! This class will have a minimum of 10 participants.
Young scientists under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
