Gyroscopes and Tops
Gyroscopes are based on the principles of angular momentum, and are devices used to measure or maintain orientation. From a mechanical perspective, a gyroscope is a spinning wheel or disk in which the axle is free to assume any orientation. While the orientation will not remain fixed, changes in response to an external torque occur much less and changes in direction are much smaller than would occur without the large angular momentum associated with the disk’s high rate of spin and moment of inertia.
