Based on the feedback from the survey we held last month, BioCurious will be kicking off its first community project this week:
BioPrinter: Hacking an inkjet printer for 3D bioprinting
inkjet printers can be used to print chemicals, proteins, and even
cells onto a surface. Print multiple layers on top of each other, and
you get a 3D printer for biological tissues and organs! This project has
something for everyone: hardware hacking, electronics, cell biology,
synthetic biology - you name it!
We'll be holding our first project meeting this Wednesday, 7:30pm at BioCurious. Sorry for the late notice, but we wanted to get this project rolling as soon as possible. This first meeting will mainly be organizational and some more brainstorming. If you can't make it, feel free to give us some feedback here on the mailing list. Here's some of the questions we'll need to discuss:
- When and how often to hold regular project meetings
- Who will help lead the project (so far, we have James Cortese, Venkata Ravuri, Simon Frid, and myself)
- Different areas of expertise needed (e.g., know anyone who can write Linux printer drivers?)
- What should be our end goal for this project, plus some interesting applications along the way
Our second community project will be a Bioluminescent Nightlamp - expect to see an announcement about that one soon as well. We're still looking for people with experience in synthetic biology to help lead that one though.
Participation in community projects will generally be open to everyone, but do keep in mind that you do need to be a member to actually work in the lab.
