Announcing a new Meetup for BioCurious!

What: BioCurious at The Tech

When: Saturday, August 7, 2010 11:00 AM

Where: The Tech Museum of Innovation
201 S Market St
San Jose, CA 95113
408-294-TECH

Explore genetics like a kid! (in other words, using the latest technologies...) We will explore the genetics exhibit of The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, where stations will be set up for BioCurious members to perform the following biological techniques:

  • GFP transformation
  • Cheek cell staining (buccal swab, stain, and a picture)
  • DNA extraction
  • Gel electrophoresis
  • GFP protein purification (take home a vial of GFP!)
  • and PTC taster testing (figure out your genotype based on whether you can taste it!)

We will be led by BioCurious supporter Jennifer Shieh, PhD, and her team of brilliant Stanford grad students.

BONUS! August 7th is Bank of America's "Museums on Us" day, so every BofA cardholder gets free entrance to the museum, plus entry to an IMAX educational film. Otherwise, entrance is $10 (for the museum plus IMAX) or, if you want to see the Genghis Khan exhibit, it's $25 (adults), $22 (seniors/college students with ID), $15 (kids 3-17).

We expect to run from 11am to 1pm, roughly. You're welcome to stay to check out other exhibits or catch a film, of course. The Tech is open until 5pm for your learning pleasure.

See you there!
