Alastair Mackay, PhD joined the Maryland Venture Fund as Senior Life Sciences Principal in April 2013. For the prior seven years, he provided expert coverage of public companies in the biotech, life science tools, medical devices, and molecular diagnostics industries for the institutional clients of GARP Research and Securities. His mandate was to identify and track companies that could fuel sustained earnings growth by developing and marketing high-value products. From 1996 to 2005, Alastair was a scientist/manager at Osiris Therapeutics, where he studied the differentiation of adult human stem cells while writing grants, contracting outside research, and preparing regulatory filings on stem cell therapies for arthritis, heart attacks, and spinal cord injury. Alastair’s postdoctoral training was at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he cloned and sequenced an essential protein of the chromosome to discover its function. Alastair earned his PhD at the University of Vermont by studying how asbestos exposure leads to lung cancer. He received his bachelor’s degree in Earth Sciences from Dartmouth College.
Dr. Scott Freed, Esq. is a partner in the corporate and securities practice group at Whiteford, Taylor & Preston. Scott represents both private and public clients in a broad range of transactions and corporate and securities matters, including private capital, financing transactions and M&A. Scott has represented issuers and underwriters in public offerings, buyers and sellers in mergers, purchase and sale transactions, and companies in venture capital financings and private offerings of both debt and equity securities. Scott earned an LLM from Georgetown University’s School of Law, a JD from the Akron University School of Law, and a BS from Miami University.
