NOTE: This event is replacing the Harris' Hawk event originally scheduled for December 1. Quite a few members from that event are already signed up for this one. That is why the maximum group size is so low.
Rocky Mountain Arsenal is one of the largest urban wildlife refuges in the US and it's just northeast of downtown Denver. in 1986, a winter communal roost for bald eagles, then an endangered species, was discovered on the Arsenal. The Fish and Widlife Service soon realized the Arsenal provided habitat for more than 330 species of wildlife. In 1992, the area was designated as a wildlife refuge.
The Arsenal has recently opened a 9-mile wildlife auto tour and a new Visitor Center. The refuge provides great winter habitat for a variety of raptors including bald eagle, ferruginous hawk, rough-legged hawk, red-tailed hawk, American kestrel, and great horned owl. In addition, it's a great place in winter to hone your waterfowl ID skills! We'll make several stops along the drive for birding. We'll also keep an eye out for mule deer, coyote, prairie dogs and bison.
Meeting time: 9:30 am
Meeting location: Let's park close to Prost Brewing Company and we'll carpool to the Arsenal. There is street parking close to the brewery.
After the Arsenal, we'll head to Prost Brewing Company (http://www.prostbrewing.com/index.html) for some German-style brews. Their Weißbier is my current favorite!
