For everyone's information this month's Birmingham Skeptics talk is titled 'The Psychology of Possession & Exorcism" Wednesday 8th October. I'm booked elsewhere so it's unlikely I'll be there.

By the way. Singer Peter Gabriel studied Jung and wrote some material inspired by him:
"Rhythm of the Heat", "Shock the Monkey" + "Diggin' in the Dirt" videos are available on You Tube for anyone interested?
Very creative videos with amazing animations in "Diggin' in the Dirt."

As a point of irritation here to both Mark & "a former member" I'd like to ask where your photograph is? I can't work out who you are. Its a bit ripe to moan about not being noticed if you haven't even put a photo of yourself up.

    September 14

    • Paul N

I'm afraid the answer to that must come from within you and we hope by exploring ideas like Jung's shadow can provide answers but I can assure you that no one consciously behaved exclusively. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe it is the purpose of the group to offer therapy or support and indeed it would be very unethical for me personally to offer that as I am not a therapist. I'm sure that others within the group can offer this and perhaps we spawn a group to offer group therapy who's only objective is to engender feelings of inclusiveness and support.

      September 15

    • Paul N

Another theme for another session may be to explore ideas of narcissistic & paranoid perceptions and behaviour and I'm up for turning the searchlight on myself. Remember that Laurel did say as a take away point that one of the predictions of Jung's shadow is that one often dislikes in others aspects of themselves that are in their own shadow (through repression). In this way I'd like to think that, although the chosen themes may seem extremely esoteric, the parallel processing can be mildly therapeutic by being gently challenging. Now how do we want the group to go?

This was my first meet up too. I must say I feel my presence wasn't even acknowledged. I'm wondering why

    September 14

    • Laurel T.

Hi Mark, I'm so sorry that you feel that way! I can imagine that has left a bad taste in your mouth about the group. We usually start the meeting with introductions and greetings. I was a bit flustered and perhaps opened the meet poorly. I hope you give us another chance. Due to some other feedback I have received I am in the process of setting up a socialising night that will take place in the next couple weeks. Our meetings are in the beginning stages so hopefully they will only improve and become more dynamic from here on in. Hope to see you again.

This was my first psyc meet up / discussion - it was interesting and engaging. Thank you for all the intelligent contributions and personal interpretations, it was enjoyable having the opportunity to thrash out ideas and philosophical principles.

To add my voice to the sound of the crowd & reinforce Laurel's point that it doesn't have to be like this; there are no rules - we are free to invent them and I'd go for social events as well as the focused discussions. I too feel a thirst for being with like minded folks that I find difficult to satisfy with other meetup groups. Unfortunate events over the past few years have battered my self esteem & I would welcome being accepted socially instead of being locked into the intellectual mode I'm in at the moment (I know its a defence)

The last two comments are very useful feedback. Perhaps we need to plan some socialsing events as well as our usual monthly discussions.

    September 13

  • Corinne L.

I found the discussion to be very interesting, but feel the same as the last comment, that really what I am looking for is the chance to socialise with like-minded people in a more informal setting. Thanks anyway and best of luck!

Great to meet you all, I was hoping more for a mingling, mooching and chatting kinda group, so probably not my cup of tea. Reminded me of being at uni again :-)
I wish your group well though with your future meetings, enjoy and best of luck x

Hi All, The date and time for this meetup has finally been scheduled. I apologize for the delay. It took me much longer to settle in after my holiday then anticipated. Please bring all knowledge of Jung's Shadow. The format will like the previous meetings; conversational, free-flowing, and reliant on member contributions. Hope to see you all there!

Sorry for the delay in getting this meetup up and running! I'll be calling the Prince of Wales in Moseley today to see if they have a larger room then the one we met in last time. Trying to pick a free weekend day has been tricking due to the fact that it is summer holidays. How does everyone feel about a week day night?

The Church Inn along Constitution Hill has a back room available for small-medium sized groups. Not far from Jewellery quarter.

Does anybody know when (or even if) this event is happening? If we are stuck for a venue this month, we could use the Timeout Lounge in the Jewellery Quarter which is run by a friend of mine (who also happens to have a masters degree in psychology). The cost would be £3 each but we get tea/coffee, non alcoholic drinks and biscuits for that. It can seat 18 people at the moment. www.thetimeoutlounge.co.uk

I was just reading Clair's introduction (as you do) and while I mused over "knowing how our mind works is the key" it occurred to me that by changing "knowing" to "understanding" & also its object we can turn it around to the semantically related statement "...feeling understood is the key". Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

    July 4

I agree, Paul. Understanding is the key to emotional prosperity & unleashing our potential. Sharing our experience at the emotional level can be truly liberating.
