Another in our series of hugely popular wine tasting events at The Electric Cinema, basically drink along as you watch the film.
Following on from last year’s screening of the original Hammer classic Dracula, the next Shock & Gore wine tasting offers another take on the Bram Stoker creation - this time Francis Ford Coppola’s stylish 1992 version of the bloodsucker legend, starring Gary Oldman as the tormented creature of the night and Winona Ryder as his long-lost love, with some delicious red wines to accompany the lavish visuals onscreen.
Focusing more on the erotic side of the Dracula character, Coppola’s film begins with a prelude set in the 15th century, Oldman’s crusading soldier renouncing God when he discovers his wife Elisabeta (Ryder) has committed suicide. Skip forward to 1897, where solicitor Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves) travels to Transylvania, where he encounters the centuries-old Dracula, who soon travels to England to be reunited with his dead wife, who he believes has been reincarnated as Harker’s wife Mina.
Coppola was insistent on using no modern-day special effects during filming, giving the film a pleasingly old school feel that carries through to the theatrical performances from the likes of Oldman and Anthony Hopkins as vampire hunter Dr Helsing.
It’s the ideal film to appreciate with a selection of wines from expert Ian Harvey from The Wine Tasting Company, who’ll be pausing the film at opportune moments to take the audience through five different and beautiful red wines (some from Eastern Europe, a la Dracula's birthplace) that he’s personally selected.
