2nd Bitcoin Meetup

Hi guys,

on our first meetup, I said I'll make sure, that on our 2nd, we could pay for beer and coffee with bitcoins. And guess what, I kept the promise! :-)

I persuaded Artistry owner to start accepting bitcoins and agreed with him to throw a 2nd meetup in his place. The venue is secured, so let's go, meet, drink and pay with our mobile wallets :-)

See you then,

Tomas

I have a couple of questions:

    1. Wouldn't the interest rates in Bitcoin be higher than fiat money because Bitcoin is eventually deflationary? Or due to cheap convertibility between fiat and Bitcoin, would the interest rates be same?

    2. Since Bitcoin scarcity is a majority consensus, and not really immutable like the laws of physics which dictate the scarcity of gold, isn't gold a superior currency? Bitcoin can be confiscated using Rubber-hose cryptanalysis. So what's the advantage over gold?

    September 17, 2013

    • Tomas F.

Hi Edwin. Interest rates depend mostly on level of savings and inflation rate. Since inflation rate is predetermined to be low and most bitcoins are currently saved rather then spent, the interest rates should stay low even when fiat interest rates will start to skyrocket. As for the scarcity question, Bitcoin is scarce based on laws of mathematics. Even if the majority consensus would shift towards higher inflation, it would most probably create a chain fork. Those having bitcoins before the fork would continue having them after the fork and higher inflation in the new blockchain would soon trigger downward pressure on it's value, sending people back to the old one, so I wouldn't be too worried about that :-)

Anyone paying with Bitcoin in Artistry or elsewhere, would you be willing to speak with Straits Times for the piece about Bitcoin they're preparing? If yes, please send me your phone number, so I can give it to the reporter. Thanks!

    • Edwin J. P.

I am very afraid of Straits Times, because the last time they did a piece on an atheist meetup they made the atheist community look like a bunch of weirdos.

    • Tomas F.

well, to be honest, atheist meetup sounds weird :-))

Hey all! I'm living in Taiwan and have been in talks with Lammasu's founder about purchasing a number of Bitcoin ATM's. I'm considering Singapore as one of the first locations to place a Bitcoin ATM. Do you feel like Singapore could support a bitcoin ATM? Are enough people interested in it to make it at least break even? I don't care about making a lot of money, but I don't want to lose money. More than anything I want to proliferate the number of bitcoin users. Please post here or pm me! I'd love your input, advice, ideas, etc...!

Hi Sky, I'm in contact with Lammasu representative for SEA and we discussed this as well and frankly, I don't see Singapore as a place where this might be profitable in any forseeable future, the scene is tiny so far and growing slowly. Anyway, we want to bring one of them for a month or two this year to show it off and see how it goes. If it's going well, then I suggest to team up and share costs for the first machine, what do you think?

    • Sky P.

I think that's a wonderful idea! Let's keep in touch!

Guys, we need a 'Satoshi Square' here in Singapore. I propose 'Bedok Reservoir - Floating Deck'. Any comments..?! :-)

    July 31, 2013

    • David M.

They are also calling it Bitcoin Buttonwood, in honor of the original Wall Street name: http://en.wikipedia.o...

'Buttonwood' can be something other than 'Bedok Reservoir - Floating Deck'.. :-)

Hi guys. This sounds like an awesome idea. I will definitely be there. I'm currently working on an Android app that might actually help out the bartender in getting payments. I could demo it there. Someone said something about buying and selling bitcoins on the spot. Maybe we could start Singapore "buttonwood". Great idea! (http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2013/05/06/a-push-for-a-bitcoin-buttonwood/?_r=0 )

7 is a bit too early for me. But I'll be there by 8.

    1 · July 27, 2013

    • Zohair A.

That is an idea. Although it would require a lot more work. I don't think the android activity lifecycle is portable to other environments.

      July 29, 2013

    • Tomas F.

that's exactly my plan, to create just public key generator from master public key. I need it for my site anyway, so I'll just make it available for SG merchants

I'd be interested in doing an 'open outcry' sales/buying of bitcoin.
May be good way to get publicity. Record the bids/buys on video, post to the news sites etc...

Guys, I'm also interested in buying ASIC miners through groupbuy way, just like what we see in bitcointalk.org. we'll discuss about feasibility of miner group buy.. I'll be there asap in the evening, but 7 pm is bit impossible for me.

    Hi,
Good to hear you guys managed to convince the shop to get started with Bitcoin!! I was at the first event in May and am primarily based in Tokyo.

For your info, below is Bitcoin New York meetup group host interview (last month) about how they grew to some 300 members so quick. They now do two meetups a week!!

Bitcoin seems to hold up pretty well security wise as it has not been hacked to date. Adoption however is lagging in this great city! I propose we focus the meet on that.

How about if someone presented something on how Bitcoins work - the ledger, mining, that kind of stuff.

    July 19, 2013

    • Tomas F.

I did it a couple of times, so I can do that again no problem, but I suspect all of those joining probably already understand it, don't you think?

      1 · July 20, 2013

    • kit

I've only heard it described at a superficial level. I'd be interested in learning more in detail. There was something about multiple ledgers? When is a new ledger created, what happens to the old ledgers? For a networking analogy, down to the level of ARP, UDP, TCP, NAT, ICMP. Detailed enough to get an idea of the security of the system and possible in-network attacks.

BTW, I'm planning to buy about 12 BTC, anyone selling please quote.
