BLACK CINEMA CLUB presents BURNING AN ILLUSION

Burning an Illusion (1981)

Writer: Menelik Shabazz,

Director: Menelik Shabazz,

Starring: Cassie McFarlane (Pat Williams);

Victor Romero Evans (Del Bennett);

Running Time: 101 min

A timeless classic and it's a British film!!!!

Young, beautiful and naive to the challenges of loving relationships Pat Williams, finds the man of her dreams. Her developing relationship with Del, a streetwise brotha, throws up issues we're all too familar with.

At a time when late night blues with sound systems were the rage, Cortina's were the black mans Mercedes, Farahs' were the style icons must wear and flying saucers were worn by almost every sista in town, this 1981 gem is an absolute must see.

The film won the Grand Prix at the Amiens International Film Festival in France, and Cassie McFarlane won the Evening Standard Award for "Most Promising New Actress".

Burning an Illusion and its pioneering director Menelik Shabazz were honoured with a Screen Nation Classic Film Award in October 2011.

The film director and some of the original cast will be present during this screening.

    This was the first event I attended. Even though I had seen the film before it was a much better experience this time watching it with like minded people. The guests I brought with me also enjoyed themselves too. Looking forward to next time.

    Fantastic movie and gets better every time i watch it. Victor and Cassie in their early twenties at the time we're so far ahead of their time and as for the filmmaker Menelik who was also in his twenties when making the film, the man is a living icon. The audience as always were an absoulute treat to work for. Patient, curteous, supportive, learnered and inquisitive. A pleasurable experience despite the minor hiccups.

    Hey Sheila
    I am so sorry I missed your message. I am part of BCC and also live in North West London, please inbox me if you ever get stuck the next time. I am really trying to get us to show some of our movies in North West London, so your support and support of the others from North West London will help my cause.

    Sorry to say you did miss a great night, but I am sure we will have many more events like this.

    Hi Deola
    People would be there from around 6:30pm to get good seats. Many people come alone, so don't worry about that, we are just one big happy family. Looking forward to meeting you.

    This is my first meet up with the group and I am coming alone. What time is everyone likely to bet there?

    • Jide

      Hi Deola, anywhere between 6 & 6:45 if there's a good number of us we can take group photo's before.

      Hey Chantel, as long as your son is accompanied by an adult it's fine, particularly if you'd like him to see rare footage of us as a community from a mere 30 years back.

    Hello everyone, I'm new to the group and looking forward to first meetup. A good film needs popcorn and drinks so my question is, will there be popcorn and drinks available for purchase or can we bring some to share?

    November 19, 2012

    • Dee T.

      Popcorn is always available for free, but drinks may be purchased. Welcome and enjoy the evening.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
