I consider myself to be a "born again freethinker." I was raised in a secular home and was a pretty outspoken atheist as a teenager, even though I wasn't raised to be explicitly anti-religious. I never had the "traditional black church" experience, and I'd probably freak out if I had to go to one. However, I was always interested in studying religion from an intellectual standpoint. This searching caused me to decide to convert to Catholicism in 2005. I was quite devout for a time, but as usual, I kept asking questions and found that they weren't being answered. I tried a bunch of other denominations, obsessively searching for the "True Church" and becoming very anxious about the issue. Last year, I eventually came to terms with the fact that there was no "True Church" and I was just making myself sick for no reason. I think I was a freethinker even when I was religious, because I was always asking questions and wanting to find out the truth for myself. That is my real identity.
I'll try (I'm "in between jobs" at the moment).
