Get Out of Your Head: Turn that killer idea into a reality

So you have an idea for an app or website. You've talked it over with your friends, co-workers, and grandma. They all think it's great idea, but how do you go about turning that idea into a reality? How do you build something that people are willing to use? Better yet, how do you build something people are willing to pay for?

In this day and age, we're building more products than ever before, but most of them fail--not because we can't complete what we set out to build, but because we waste time, money, and effort building the wrong product.

This hands-on workshop, facilitated by our very own Sasha Kai Parker, combines several innovative startup methodologies, including the Lean Startup, Customer Development, and bootstrapping

You will learn:

  • proven methods for evaluating product ideas that will raise your odds of launching a successful startup
  • how to create a business model that is scalable and repeatable

This is the first in a series of workshops designed to help the members of BIT-LA create, build and launch successful, scalable startups.

NOTE: This will not be a lecture. We will be working, whiteboarding and breaking down your idea into a viable business model. Come prepared to take notes!

Sasha's Bio:

Sasha Kai Parker is a technology enthusiast and interactive producer/project manager living & playing in Los Angeles. From a young age, Sasha was always intrigued by the impact of technology on the human experience. As a kid, she'd spend hours disassembling her father's electronics just to understand how these tiny circuit boards were forever changing people's everyday lives. That fierce curiosity has never left Sasha, and she's been able to parlay her childhood insights into a successful career in the interactive world.

Most recently, Sasha has merged her passions for startups and underrepresented communities by creating Infamous Labs: A mentorship program that provides resources & networking to help launch minority-owned startups in the Greater LA Area.

Having worked for a number of startups across a variety of industries, Sasha understands the unique challenges new companies face as they begin to forge ahead with new ventures. Her professional experience spans the fields of editorial, marketing, social media, digital strategy, and product management.

Sasha holds a bachelors degree in Journalism from Kent State University and a Masters of Communication Management, with an emphasis on Digital Media & Online Technology, from the University of Southern California.

This sounds like a wonderful meetup! My question, how developed does the idea have to be beyond the thought for this workshop?

    April 13, 2013

    • Sasha Kai P.

Hi Paula! The idea can still be in its infancy stages. The goal of this first workshop is really to help you flesh out your idea and see what viable products/business models you can create from it going forward.

I have a game app I need help with. Is this the right meet up?

    April 11, 2013

    • Sasha Kai P.

Hey Phyllis! Thanks for your question. This meetup is for anyone who is look to launch a startup around an idea or early-stage protoype of an app or website. If you have a specific need (i.e. developers/designers/etc), this particular meetup won't be helpful, but please attend our larger group meetup on May 1st and we'll find a way to get you what you need. You can also e-mail myself or John Malonson with what you need and we can help identify people who may be able to assist you.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
