"...Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates." Deuteronomy 6:4-9
This playgroup is hosted by the mothers of Riverside Community Church. We understand that with kids "the days are long but the years fly by". During any season, we all long for a helping hand, words of encouragement, someone to trouble shoot a problem with, to exchange recipes / meals, and an opportunity for our kids to socialize so we can have an adult conversation. We hope this community will come alongside you to help you and your kids bloom into the people God has designed you to be.
WHO: This group is for the mothers and friends' of mothers of Riverside Community Church who are working or at home and who has a child (0 - elementary school age) that lives in/around Columbia, SC. Currently, membership is not available to men although dads can attend with a current member as appropriate (a public venue at a zoo/park or if friends with the host).
WHAT/WHERE: We would like to have a full calendar of playdates (1-3 a wk) that appeal to a variety of budgets and interests. There is no pressure to attend all the scheduled meet-ups, but we encourage members to be involved and active (RSVPing, make suggestions, attend, or schedule a meet up). We encourage each member to schedule a meetup so that the burden of the calendar does not fall on a few. Suggestions are: lunch at the park, going together to the consignment sale, craft & lunch at a member's house, pool party, day at the museum, Book Club, Meal swap, Mother's Night Out/In, etc. We only ask that meet-ups are not scheduled for personal business or profit.
WHEN: Because travel, worship, and family time tends to dominate weekends, most of our gatherings take place during the week. We realize our moms live all over the city and know that babies/preschoolers/school-aged kids come with their unique schedules - early meals, naps, and homework. Don't worry about being able to include everyone; rather schedule/attend what works for your family. Please mention if there is an age limit/recommendation, but know that times/activities will typically attract families that are similar in age as yours. This is also why it is important to RSVP to all events, even if it is a No response.
HOW TO JOIN: Click the "Join Us!" button on our Welcome page and complete the profile questions, which help us get to know you a little until we can actually meet. If you expect to be approved, please fill out all the questions and submit a photo of yourself.
REQUIREMENTS AS A MEMBER: 1) To help those hosting, please RSVP, even if it is a No response. 2) We'd like to promote a welcoming/positive atmosphere-- introduce yourself to people you don't know, welcome new members, connect people who have things in common, refrain from gossip/slander. 3) Because we aim to develop a community, we ask for members to be involved. Please let us know if you do not wish to be involved or if there is a reason that you cannot be involved at the moment, as we will consider removing you from the group if you have been inactive for 2 months. 4) We are asking people to contribute $7 annually to help offset the cost of using Meetup; this can be paid in cash or via Meetup's WePay system. If there is extra money, the group will decide how to use any remaining money at the end of the year.
