The build doesn't really come into its own until level 12 when you can complete the combo. The defender is ideal in a choke point so any enemies move adjacent to the defender. Then he can make an opportunity attack (Feat: Polearm Gamble, and gets a +3 from his wis and an additional +2 from blade opportunist) and use the at-will opening shove to push the target back 2 squares (feat: spear push) and knock them prone (feat: polearm momentum).
