Bloomington Secular Network Message Board › Meetup Fee
I was notified that the fee for our meetup group is due in August. It's $72 for the next 6 months. I paid the initial fee to open this meetup group 6 months ago but it'd be great if everyone could chip in a little for the fees going forward.
Here's the direct link to the page where you can make a contribution to this group.
The Bloomington Secular Network - http://bloomingtonsecularnetwork.com/ - is a network (duh) of several local groups in Bloomington. Each group has the goal to promote Secularism and establish a Secular community and each group takes a slightly different approach and/or has a slightly different focus.
This meetup page will be updated with all events of every group so if you join, this will be your one-stop-shop for just about all secular activities in Bloomington!
We also have a table at the Bloomington Farmer's Market. Come by to say hi and chat or get involved and help us run the table if you have time! Check out the details in the event description.
And here are the groups:
Secular Parents of Bloomington
While the other groups below are a little further along in their effort to organize and establish themselves, the parents group is new. In fact, it's not even really a group yet. We don't have any meetings scheduled for current lack of members. If you are interested in this particular group, we suggest you join the meetup and come to the Atheist Happy Hour and meet other parents there.
We don't (yet) have a website or twitter/facebook page so I will explain the purpose of this group a little more here.
The group is borne out of two observations:
a) We are somewhat new to Bloomington and most parents we have met here are religious and frequently hearing things like "You're blessed to have a child", "Having a child was God's plan for you/me", etc. is getting a bit old. We'd love to meet secular parents with whom we don't have to tiptoe around certain subjects. So if you're a secular parent looking for other parents to socialize with (play dates, baby sitting co-ops, etc.) in a faith free, judgement free environment, come join!
b) Faith based institutions virtually hold a monopoly on all child related activities. It is mostly (possibly exclusively) churches and other faith based institutions that offer child day care, camps, various courses for children, "parents day out" child care, holiday related children's activities, etc. We think there should be secular alternatives to those activities and events and ideally, this group will be a step in that direction. Obviously, this is a big goal for the future but as the group grows (as we hope it will) we might be able to facilitate certain children's activities on our own (think picnics, day trips, family bbqs, family Jesus Zombie Day, etc!).

Info about "membership dues"
We have set up a way for members to donate to this meetup. The meetup website calls this "membership dues" but this is misleading. We are simply asking for donations if you are able to give something. Membership, events and meetings are in no way restricted if you do not donate.
Having said that, donations would enable us (or at least make it easier) to organize all kinds of awesome things! For example, a few weeks ago we had a panel discussion on the subject "Are Religion and Science Compatible?" It filled the room and was a big success. It also came with a $1500 price tag for the catering and a whole lot of hours put in by volunteers. With donations, we could organize this kind of event more cost effectively and as a result more often.
Other examples of what could be paid with donations:
- Costs of running the meetup page
- Our table at the Bloomington Farmer's Market
- Fun activities like potlucks, barbecues, day trips or anything else we can think up!
- Creating promotional material for our group
- Food and drink at our Atheist Happy Hours!
- Food and drink and/or compensation for organizers of events
- Supporting charitable causes of our choosing (e.g. local food banks, Red Cross, etc.) as a group instead of individually to dispel the notion that we atheists are baby eating Satan worshippers ;)
You can pay online here. Once you sign up for dues, you will be automatically billed each month. You will always be reminded before each charge, and you can cancel your dues at any time.
