Meet to discuss current book and choose next one.

Hello! It's that time of the month again, and thanks to the hard work of 3rd Thursdayer Janie (Thanks Jane!) we have a reservation standing at The Pour House--which is apparently an awesome little coffee house on Kirkwood!

According to YELP! it does have it's own parking lot, and the coffee is low cost, with some of the best brew in Bloomington, and apparently the tips go to charity, which makes it a local favorite.

The agenda for this meeting is to discuss the book we should all have read by then--and if you haven't, PLEASE don't let that stop you from attending. There is no way to jump in that's any better than showing up! So be there!

Also, we will discuss what book to choose for the next meeting, as well as decide how books will be assigned and how meetings will be going from here on out. Hopefully we can plan enough months in advance that I can keep this calendar updated!

Please, do take a moment to RSVP, and if I can remember, i will bring Hello My Name Is stickers for this meeting, since it's the first time we will really all be in one place at one time!

I can't wait to hear what you all thought about the book, and pick the next one!

Catch you at The Pour House!

Erica

Good morning! I really enjoyed the meeting last Thurs. It was fun meeting some more of the members.

Sorry I got off topic recommending Watership Down. I just meant to plant a seed not use it as a group book. I recommend it all the time. :)

I concur. No apologies necessary for suggesting a book you love.

Thanks guys! Alex, I hope Fiver shows himself in your yard often. Sometimes I refer to cars as hrududu.. :)

Would anyone be interested in being part of a writing group? My thoughts were to have a support group where we can share writing, ideas, creativity exercises and tools. NOT - A place of criticism and tearing down, but a place of construction and building of confidence. I'd love your feedback. I'm simply putting feelers out and then will go from there.
Unless Iris objects, I'll also post on WWC.

What a fantastic idea! In my heart of hearts I have always wanted to write....something. I am interested but conflicted because I don't know where I would find the time. I will continue to gel on it and I definitely want to discuss it some more. :)

OH EM GEE lol The Wonder book is good--the Playaway--but the woman reading with her fake ten yr old voice--AHHHH. Who thought THAT sounded right?????

I just wanted to say that I love all the communication and support everyone is giving. It's so exciting to see our little book club taking on such a life.

Hello all! Just a reminder, I do have a copy of the book if anyone needs to borrow it. Additionally, Keith has a discussion thread started under the discussion tab called "Novel Conversations" (good title!). He suggested a list of books based on the library catalogue. I created a survey monkey for that list IF that is the way we want to go. It took me two minutes to create the survey monkey, so I can ALWAYS create another.

    Happy reading!

Thanks Alexandra, I'm getting one copy to Karen. I will get the other from the library if someone needs it.

Alexandra- Where do I find the thread that Keith posted. I am a bit of a tech "dummy" and sometimes am not sure where to go!

I have another copy that just came into the library. If anyone needs it let me know. Otherwise I'll release the hold.

I've finished the book. Carrie, if you haven't been able to get one we can work out getting it to you. The same applies to everyone.

    It's due back 9/7

Thanks Keith. Maybe you can connect with Karen. I gave Carrie my Playaway copy today.

      August 20, 2013

  • Carrie T.

As soon as I get a proof of address like a bill or something I can get a card. In the meantime I'd love to borrow a copy from someone but not that signed copy!!! YIKES! LOL I';d be so afraid something would happen to it. The lease for where I live is at our other house and it's too far away to get..... ; ) Yes, I was there this weekend and forgot.....

    1 · August 19, 2013

I could see that being a problem. I'm sure we can work something out. I just left you a message.

Had a really great time meeting everyone! I have one copy of Wonder I can lend out. Its signed by the author, actually (so it is special to me). Please let me know if this helps. I know many people prefer not to purchase the book, but it is not terrible on Amazon. Between $7.50 and $10.00. Happy reading!

    1 · August 17, 2013

I got one at the downtown library the other day. If you don't have an online account I recommend it. It showed there were zero of nine copies available so I put in a hold request. Got it the next day. I put another hold request on when I saw the difficulty we were having getting copies. I'll let everyone know when that comes in and when I am done with mine. And Melissa, I would be disappointed if I didn't hear about at least one book someone loved at each meeting.

      2 · August 18, 2013

    • laura b.

Great Keith. Thank you so much. Yes, checking the library online is a great tool. I just looked and it seems there's 4 hold requests at the moment. I have finished the Playaway and I'll return it later today. I recommend someone putting a hold on that. It's a great little device.

      August 19, 2013

I also tried to get Wonder at the library where I used to live (visiting today). Checked out. :) Will keep trying other options.

That is, I'll attend if I can find free parking (probably in the Fourth St. garage). Could we attempt to find a location with ample free parking for future meetings?

    August 14, 2013

    • Karen A. W.

The past is past, and we are now in the brave new world of metered parking from 3rd to 11th, from Rogers to Indiana. I'm not sure if the Poplars garage is still free in the evenings. The website re the new parking regime, http://bloomington.in..., doesn't list it that way -- but it may not be defining that lot as "downtown" (despite the fact that the "downtown" meters turned out to cover a huge area).

      August 15, 2013

    • laura b.

Karen - We had a vote at the very end of the meeting and the majority were not excited about Gone with the Wind. So, Wonder by RJ Palacio was suggested because it's an easy read and a current book. Our apologies that it happened after you left.

You can park in the poplars garage. If the gates are open it's free and the gates are open after about 6. I park there all the time. It's on 6th between Grant and Dunn, across from the Runcible spoon. 2 blocks away from the Pourhouse Cafe. It's also open on weekends if you are in the area...

Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight. Start looking for us in the back part of the upstairs section of the Pour House. If we aren't there, then go downstairs to the reserved rooms. The last couple of meetings members have been getting there a little early to get a good table. So don't be surprised if you see a full group by 7:30. CAN"T WAIT to talk about this book with all of you.

What's the current book (for the 8/15 discussion)? Not sure if I'll have time to get a copy and read it by then but I'll try!

    July 31, 2013

A Thousand Splendid Suns (by the author of The Kite Runner).

      July 31, 2013

    • laura b.

I see Karen beat me to answering your question. The author is Khaled Hosseini. He's also released a 3rd novel, And the Mountains Echoed, in May. Come to the meeting regardless!

I won't be able to go to the next meetup in August. Janie, do you want my copy of the book or does someone need one?

I am so sorry I missed the last meeting, but I will probably miss the next one as well. My husband just lost his job totally out of the blue, and we are circling the wagons. I still love this group, and have every intention of coming back, but just this second, I expect you to go along without me.

If all goes well, I will come right back and just be happy this group is so stable!

      July 23, 2013

  • Karen A. W.

I'm not sure why this page is showing the August meeting date rather than the July one, but I have a question about July: I don't have the book, and the library is out of it. Does anyone have an extra?

And another question: a friend of mine, who's an excellent writer, wrote a (quite negative) review of this book. Would anyone be interested in seeing it?
