Four Seasons at Roan Highlands Winter hike.

I am going to attempt to do all four seasons at Roan Highlands. If you've ever hiked there you know it's one hike you can't do enough. We will be above 6000' for most of this hike and could encounter heavy snow and severe weather. As stated above, I will be doing this hike in warmer weather so if you're not an experienced, cold weather hiker  you should wait for one of the other hikes.

I plan to drive to the Mountain Harbor Hostel-Inn on Friday evening and either stay at the hostel or camp on the grounds. I will arrange for a shuttle Saturday morning, after enjoying their world famous breakfast. You can come Friday evening at any time or arrive early Saturday morning. I'll post the shuttle time closer to the date.

Saturday: Shuttle to Carvers Gap and hike north on the AT to Bradley Gap, 8.7 miles. We will take our time hiking over Round Bald, Jane Bald and maybe do a side trip to Grassy Ridge to enjoy the views. We'll probably stop at the Over Mountain Shelter for lunch. We'll then climb up and over Little Hump Mountain and down into Bradley Gap to set up camp.

Sunday: We'll begin the morning hiking over Hump Mountain before dropping down into Doll Flats and on to HWY 19 and back to our cars at the hostel. 6.3 miles.

Total Distance: 15.7 miles including the short road hike to the hostel.

Rating: Difficult due to extreme weather.

We will arrange car pooling options later.

Options: As stated above you can arrive on Saturday Morning if you get a very early start. The only other option for this trip is to arrange a shuttle for Friday night and camp somewhere like Roan High Knob. Personally, I'm doing the breakfast option at the hostel.

Unfortunately, I had some problems downloading my photos. After a lot of trial and error I finally got them on my pc and managed to get them on my Facebook, but for some reason it won't accept them here.

Really great group of friends; old and new. Folks that really enjoy hiking. Good company. Good stories. Good weather. Good scenery. Beautiful countryside. Thanks to our organizer - appreciate your extra effort for all of us.

I'll post a few pics when I rest up. Little Hump and Big Hump did a number on this old, out of shape man. Took all my pics with the phone so I'm looking forward to seeing the ones others took with cameras.

You just can't go wrong with a hike at Roan Highlands! Especially when you have great company like we had this weekend. Really enjoyed hiking with you guys. Still can't believe that last week there was over two feet of snow on those balds and yesterday several were napping in the sun in short sleeves. Just goes to show you never can tell at that elevation. Looking forward to the next hike up there.

Warner I sent you an email but if you don't get it we'll see you at Carver's Gap between 9:30 and 10:00. Hope you're right about the snow but I really wouldn't count on it. If the report was correct and there was over two feet of snow, combine with the fact that it hasn't gotten out of the 40's at that elevation all week, I wouldn't be shocked to find at least a foot of snow. But hopefully you're right and it won't be too much to hike in. Sutton and I are leaving Greenville between 3:30 and 4:30 and will meet the rest of you at the hostel. Billy let me know what you guys are planning.

Forecast is looking a little more favorable at this point. Sutton and I were talking about leaving around 5-5:30 when he leaves work. Tyler I guess you're still driving up earlier in the day. David touch base with me if you want to car pool with Sutton and I. Need to know if you're planning to stay in the hostel, camp on the grounds or rent a room at the inn.

Called Mtn Harbour and got a bed in the hostel. He told me they don't do breakfast in the off season.

Talked to Mary earlier and she gave me the bad news. There's a diner just up the road. Talked to Sutton and we decided it would probably be best to shuttle ourselves and if the snow is too deep we'll look at just doing a day hike then go somewhere else with less snow and backpack in. Hopefully a lot will melt and we'll be able to hike in it.

Just talked to Mary at Mountain Harbour. She said a group went in this past weekend and turned back after three miles because the snow was between knee and thigh deep. I expect there to be a fair amount of melt this week due to the temps but still expect to encounter a foot or more. The rooms at the inn are booked but the hostel is open. After talking with Mary I think it would be wise to shuttle ourselves and have a vehicle at Carvers Gap. The really bad news is Mary doesn't start serving breakfast until mid March. Devastating news but we'll have to eat at a cafe up the street.

I'll call next week and look at shuttle times. I would say around 9 but I'll get back with you.

+2 on how the winter weather can 'strike' up there.... Last time up there had to hike through snow over my waste and literally lost the AT before able to reach overmountain shelter! My co-hikers had packed in skis and snowboard and took full advantage of that

Really feel that I need to stress that we could very well be post holing through snow on this hike. We'll keep an eye on the weather but even without snow the temps could easily plummet to single digits or lower...
