Kentucky River, Ft. Boonesborough

Can paddle downstream up to 18 miles or more.  Hopefully can group people together that want to go about the same distance at about the same speed.  I would probably go down to Boone Creek/Clays Ferry and back (12 miles total).

If you want to go less/more, see the river chart 25 here to pick out some landmarks for your trip distance: http://finance.ky.gov/about/Documents/KentuckyRiverNavigationCharts2011.pdf

You may be able to rent canoes or kayaks from Three Trees http://www.threetreeskayak.com/, but its up to you to make arrangements and get the boat from there to the ramp and back.

This was my first time paddling on the ky. I enjoyed my experience....The water temp was perfect, the rock formations was stunning, the sounds of nature, peaceful, the different pockets of air, freshing not to mention that was my longest float to date. :) It was a very Good Day! I should have brought my camera.

Maria noticed the rock opening, that Jerry also photographed. She wondered if it was natural or a mine opening. Don said that Feldspar used to be mined but did not know if here. I was able to get a photograph that does seem to show a support timber, so maybe it is an abandoned mine. I have attached the photograph.

I enjoyed meeting new paddlers! My preference are sections without residences, lots of fast boats or traffic noise, but there were beautiful sections in the middle. Feeling good after a total of 13 miles. Maria and I were back at the ramp at 2:45.

That's what my GPS said too, 13.1 miles, but I got back around 2:00.

About as expected. Need to paddle about 2 miles to get away from civilization, then there are a few nice miles, then you start hearing I-75. Quite a lot of power boat traffic on the weekend. Did see several other kayakers right around the ramp. Riptide ramp is indeed still blocked and in rough shape. Looks like enough runoff from the parking lot to clear out path through the mud. Did see a trailered boat go toward the next ramp which is supposedly private. Don't know if it still is.

Good to meet you too. We'll get out again for sure. I'm taking a break around the 4th week for organized paddles.

Jerry, love the description of yourself! It was good to meet you and I love you photos! I hope to paddle with you again in a paddle that does not have us all spread out so far apart. We just needed more of us!!

Are we a go for Sunday? Word is the KY River by High Bridge is low and slow water.

A stupid question: Why high water level, instead of low water level, is unfavorable for kayaking?

For this section of river, I'd want to see it less than 3500 cfs for a safe trip for a group like this. My limit is about 6000 cfs. Right now, its about 8000 cfs.

      Thanks

Doing a quick extrapolation of the chart, looks like it will still be over 4000cfs in 24 hours, so will postpone this a day. Hopefully everyone can still make it.

What may be a problem is the river level. It rose over 3 feet in the last couple of days. Has peaked now, will see if it falls just as quickly. May need to postpone this a day.

Shouldn't be a problem - I know a few that have shorter kayaks that will probably want to go about the same. I'll at least get everyone on the water, but may take off and head down to Clays Ferry - this is about the only part of pool 9 I haven't done and so want to mark it off my list. Then I'll sweep on the way back. On the map, looks like a couple of rock bars at about 2.5 miles (so 5 miles total). Don't see any other obvious landmarks to make a 6 or 8 mile trip, so you'll have to pace yourselves.

Looking forward to meeting y'all this Saturday! Not going to do 18, or even 12 miles. Probably no more than 6. Will try to hang with y'all the best I can.

I may join y'all. can't commit to it yet. I'm new to kayaking. Definitely won't do the whole 18 or even 12 miles... 6 miles probably be my comfort zone!

June 22 is OK with me. Anyone want to be leader? This is one section I have not done yet, but may have by this time - a friend wants to do the 18 miles from here to Valley View this week.
