Birding, Picnic and Sunset/Moonrise Paddle on Cedar Creek Lake

Rating: Beginner, Medium Lake, No Flow, ? miles, Leisurely Pace

This is a two-part paddle and people can do both or just one.  We'd meet at 5 pm for a couple of hours paddling and looking at nesting birds ranging from nesting or just fledged bright yellow Prothonotary Warblers and many Woodpecker species to the large nesting Eagle and Osprey nests.

We'd then head back to the ramp for a break and a picnic.  About 8 pm we'd head back out for the sunset and moonrise.

Bring you own food, beverages and lawn chairs to sit around and visit during the picnic.

Some may paddle further and others can stay within a mile of the ramp and still see many birds and enjoy the sunset & moonrise making this paddle appropriate for all levels of skills and types of kayaks.

A headlamp or flashlight is legally required to paddle after sunset.  If you can't make it to leave from the ramp at 8:00, we should be back in the upper part of the main lake (visible from the ramp) in time to watch the sunset.  A dark paddle up feeder creeks usually oc

curs for those that are interested.

There is one porta potty within a close drive or available to people doing a longer paddle....or you can always take a nature walk.

On the 13th, sunset is 9:00 +/- a few minutes, moonrise is 9:33.

I have an extra kayak, also PFD (women's), but no way to transport 2 kayaks. If you have a truck, we can take both and ride together.

I can take another kayak sometime on my van but probably not today with trying to get away from work early.

A couple of additional notes: The ramp is slippery where the cement goes into the water! Be careful getting in and out of your kayaks. This lake has stumps just under the waterline a long the edges of the lake among the standing dead trees. Don't be surprised if you hit some as it can kind of startle you. We are going to split into 2 groups. One leisurely paddle past the Osprey nest and into 1 or 2 coves and up a really neat feeder creek. Good for beginner & intermediate paddlers with shorter kayaks. The other will go to the Osprey nest and then head for the far end of the lake and up the feeder creek with geodes where you will take a break. To make the round trip in 2 hours will take some faster paddling and best for more advanced paddlers with longer kayaks. Both are beautiful paddles so I ask that you be realistic as to what you can do so you don't slow down the more advanced paddlers.

I'm also planning on coming but don't have a canoe or kayak I have paddled a canoe before if anyone needs a rider. I guess I will go to Walmart to find a life jacket tomorrow. I live nearby so if anyone needs directions I know where to go. Ann

Would it offend anybody of my husband was fishing from his kayak. He is a catch and release kind of guy:-). Since it is an hour away, I am not sure I can make it but I am thinking about trying. The pictures are amazing and I would love to see the geodes.

We will keep moving except during the sunset/moonrise time. He's welcome to fish as long as anything he catches gets tossed up to an eagle or osprey if one does a fly by since they all have hungry families to feed.

Friday night is the Honey Moon and should be one of the biggest and brightest full moons of the year! Rain should be over but we may have a few lingering clouds but hopefully not enough to block the view. Little wind. You might throw in a jacket in case it gets a little cool.

I will be there by 5pm. I have been kayaking there a lot lately and have found several places that have geodes if anyone is interested. Also, if anyone needs a ride, I can take one additional kayak. Text[masked] or email [masked]. My cross roads are Tates Creek and Redding Road. Look forward to seeing everyone! Best, Cara

It has been really impressive so far! I've been touring the banks, working my way around. There is a specific lithology that you find them in, a more clayey soil profile where they erode out of. I had so many my last trip, that I could barely pull the kayak out of the water and broke the handle. I've got three that I have cracked yet because I'm going to run them through the rock saw and polish them. Fun times! :)

I would appreciate knowing who will arrive early enough to start paddling at 5 pm by responding here with a yes or no. I hope others can arrive at 7 pm for a picnic and try out kayaks. Everyone should be ready to be in the water at 8 pm. A couple of reminders: You must wear a life jacket. Everyone must have a headlamp or flashlight to paddle at 8 pm. Bring your own chair, food, non-alcoholic beverages for the picnic.

I had a great paddle here last Friday. Eaglets have fledged so, if we are lucky, we might see them. The Osprey nest with one baby is easily seen. I saw a white juvi Little Blue Heron which shouldn't be here this time of year. Lots of nesting birds and birds with young just out of the nests. We can try and work our way up some feeder creeks. This is a great lake!
