Paddle the Dix River

Rating: Beginner, Medium and Small River, Low Flow, 7 miles, Leisurely Pace

This 7 mile out and back trip will be good for beginners through advanced paddlers. This trip may be cancelled or rescheduled due to high or fast moving waters on the Kentucky or the Dix River.

Paddle past Shaker Landing, under High Bridge, take a right on the Dix River. Paddle about 2.5 miles up the Dix until you come to where the pool of the Kentucky River runs out and there is a small rapid. At the rapids we can take a break and have a picnic.

This trip is very scenic with lots of palisades, a waterfall and at this time of year many birds are building nests and butterflies may be plentiful.

It is possible to also see otter, beaver, deer, turkey, turtles, large fish in the clear waters near the rapids, butterflies and colorful birds. We will start at the High Bridge boat ramp past Wilmore. Rentals may be available (more on this later).

The end of the trip story especially for Tai and friend.....when I went to return the rental canoe I found a nice sized non-venomous Garter Snake in the bottom of the canoe. My best guess is he was in the tube that runs through the bottom of the canoe and was there the whole time! I don't know you two well enough to know if there would have been two swift exits out of the canoe if he had made himself known while you were paddling but it presents me with an interesting picture! He was quite agitated in the heat by the time I got back and, having no fear of snakes, I went to pick him up behind the head. He moved as I grabbed and my grasp was too far back, so he bit me twice. My first snake bite in all my years of picking up snakes.

Tina - good snake handlin' tips. I've taken note as I find the creatures fascinating. Thanks for sharing and glad you weren't hurt !

    • Jan W.

Wow! I am not afraid of snakes either but if one suddenly showed up in my kayak I might be in the water! Glad it had a happy ending for all.

Thanks Tina for a great trip that didn't start too early.

Looks like it's gonna be chilly, paddling that early, but I'm in! See you there, assuming I can find the ramp...

It's today. Actually, have to cancel; hope you'll offer this agin!

      May 18, 2014

    • Tina N.

I will probably offer it again in the fall. However, anyone can host a paddle. You just need to contact one of the organizers for more information. Sorry you couldn't make as it ended up being a perfect day with lots of great paddlers!

I thoroughly enjoyed the paddle with all of you today. Great weather, water conditions and new friends made for a wonderful day. I hope to see many of you at Cedar Creek Lake paddles and other meetups this summer.

Hope it's not too late to join. I've paddled the Dix several times- it's a beautiful little river. Planning on being there at 10:30am. Is there a cell number to call in case of problems ?

    May 17, 2014

    • Tina N.

It's not too late. I'd try and arrive early as we'd like to be starting to paddle at 10:30. But, with the crowd we are having we will just keep launching until every one is paddling. No cell phone to call as we just aren't that formal.

I just got back from a paddle at Taylorsville Lake this morning at 10 am. I brought all sorts of clothes, thinking about how cold it seemed, but I wisely set out with only long pants, warm shirt and my PFD - and was glad of it. It was perfect! I did not want it to be any warmer (in the sun, not shade, however). So, tomorrow is supposed to be a few degrees warmer, so I don't think it is going to be that cold for this. Wear a vest and bring a jacket that can be tossed in the boat. I am looking forward to it.

    May 17, 2014

  • Gretchen H.

Can any of the experienced paddlers offer pearls of wisdom about staying warm without overdoing it tomorrow? I'd like to avoid any newbie stupidity if I can help it, but I don't want to overdo, either.

I'm just back from paddling the Kentucky River to the Dix River in wind, cold, fog, almost constant rain AND some HAIL. However we won't have any of that on Sunday and the flow and river height is great. So, Sunday is a go! We have lots of people coming so if you park wherever you can you can help each other carry kayaks to the ramp area. It may get a bit crowded until we get all of us in the water. Last week I paddled to the Rookery and the leaves are too big to see most of the nests so I suggest the KY River to the Dix for everyone. I have a person who will bring up the rear so slower paddlers won't get left behind. It should be a great paddle!

There is now a good chance the Dix trip may be okay. The rainfall in the KY R watershed area ended up being fairly light and the ground and plants may have soaked up most of it. I think we'll have a better idea tomorrow. Thanks D. Perkins for helping me gather the information to help with a decision! Stay tuned for a decision tomorrow.

I too would be interested - would I be able to be back to Frankfort by 1:30 pm or so? Need to be in Louisville for the Wendell Berry event by 3 pm.

    May 14, 2014

    • Tina N.

You could leave whenever you needed to. If you put in Cowan Rd, Stanford KY into maps.google you can find out timing from your home.

      May 14, 2014

  • Aurora R.

I would be interested in a Cedar Creek Paddle if the KY/Dix is too fast. I started kayaking at Cedar Creek but have not been there for a while.

    May 14, 2014

  • Tina N.

Just a head's up that the river may be too fast and high again with all the rain that is happening to the south. If enough people are interested I'd be willing to change the location to Cedar Creek Lake near Stanford (approx. 1 - 1 .25 hours south of Lexington. It's a great lake for beginners to advanced. This is the location of 3 paddles this summer for Full Moon paddles if you want to read more about this location. Please keep checking here for updated river reports.

    May 14, 2014

  • Tina N.

There are 3 or[masked] foot kayaks for rent for $20 right near the ramp we use. They are the typical rental-type kayak. There are also lots of canoes at the same location. If you are interested let me know. First 3 or 4 get the kayaks that want them.

    April 18, 2014

    • Tina N.

Yes, I will reserve one under your name and get final details to you the week before.

      May 4, 2014

    • Tai

Hello Tina, can you please reserve two kayaks for me and a friend? Thank you.

Okay this may sound like a silly question but I'm a little confused on the out n back... What does this mean exactly? Paddle down river then back up? Paddle down then shuttle back?

    May 8, 2014

    • Don P.

Put-in and takeout the same place - no shuttle. Paddle out, paddle back. Out and back.

    Hi,
As a beginner I am really interested in joining you for this, but have no equipment! Does everyone in the group have their own kayaks etc, or are there spaces for people who don't? Can we hire it/borrow it/add into someone else's two man?
    Thanks

Probably depends on the venue... Canoe Kentucky rents on the Elkhorn Creek and Kentucky River, and both are great places to paddle!

      May 1, 2014

    • Tina N.

There are 3 or 4 kayaks and lots of canoes that can be rented at/near the ramp for $20. If you want one please let me know as I am coordinating the rentals for this trip.

  • Tina N.

The trip on May 4 to the Great Blue Heron rookery, using this same ramp, has been cancelled due to high fast water. I'm suggesting that we split this trip into 2 groups; one go to the rookery and the other on the Dix. Please let me know which you would like to do. Then hope for low, slow water!

    May 1, 2014

  • Dan G.

Don Perkins and I paddled from this ramp up to the Blue Heron Rookery on 4/16. A fisherman had shoveled the mud off the ramp.

    April 18, 2014

    • Don P.

I'm sure he took credit for it.

      April 18, 2014

    • Dan G.

He was about 40 years old and said he shoveled the ramp off with a snow shovel

Renting/borrowing questions keep coming up. I dug back through one of the Meetups where this topic has come up before and tried to consolidate an answer, and continue the discussion in the Discussions.

    1 · January 24, 2014

    • Don P.

That's may be Tina's friend, Ann. Tina will get specific information on this before trips that start at High Bridge.

      April 4, 2014

    • Tina N.

I emailed her and will do so again as I had no answer. I think she only has a 2 or 3 kayaks but lots of canoes.

      April 4, 2014

Cant wait to try a new river!

One of the prettiest paddles in KY, in my opinion.

Hello All! I recently joined this group and, while I am hoping to buy a things (anyone selling?), I also do not currently do not have anything at this point. Like RD, I am interested in borrowing, renting, or buying. Thanks in advance for any advise and plan to see you all in May.
