!Cancelled! Kentucky River from High Bridge to view the Great Blue Heron Rookery

Rating: Intermediate, Medium River, Low Flow, 9 miles, Moderate Pace

This out and back 9 mile trip is good for intermediate to advanced paddlers. Although some with shorter kayaks and/or beginner skills have managed it is best suited to kayaks that track well. This trip may be cancelled or rescheduled due to high fast water on the Kentucky River that can be common at this time of year.

At this time of year the Great Blue Heron rookery (nesting site) has big chicks and the leaves are still small enough to make the nests easily visible. To best view the chicks it is suggested that you bring binoculars although they can be seen without them. We have seen beaver, otter, bright yellow Prothonotary Warblers, and even a Bobcat on this trip. This is a scenic paddle on the Kentucky River, pool 7, past Shaker Landing and the Dixie Belle, under High Bridge,  past the Dix River with some scenic palisades views along the way.

After a 4.5 mile paddle we will find a group of about 50 Great Blue Heron nests along the river banks in the top of tall Sycamore trees. There are no good places to easily get out along the way, so plan to be in your kayak the whole time. Total trip length, 9 miles, make sure you can handle that distance or know when to turn back if you tire.

KY River is continuing to be very high and fast. Discharge is 25,000. I've paddled it at 5800 and it was a noticeable current. [masked] is a comfortable paddle. Here is the site where you can check KY River height and flow. http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ky/nwis/uv/?site_no=03284230&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060,00062

I'm interested in weekend trips myself. Paddled up the KY from Lock 7 last weekend...great conditions. I'm gonna go check it out in the morning just to see.

A small group of Elkhorn Paddlers is going to see a rookery on the Elkhorn in Fayette on Sunday. Water should be just right. If you have an interest email me at [masked]. We will gather north of Lex at 10AM. Paddle should last 3 hours

Sorry. I will be camping on the 18th. I would still like to go out this week-end if there is something going on. Thanks Jerry from Corbin

This trip has been cancelled due to high fast water. HOWEVER, on May 18th we have a trip scheduled up the Dix River using the same ramp. With lots of people going we could split into 2 groups and some go the rookery (9 miles) and others up the Dix River (7 or less miles). If you want to go on the 18th, please register and mention if you want to go to the rookery. Then hope for low, slow water!

Ya'll sure plan far in advance! Some groups set up an annual calendar in January; others (most that are Meetup) wait to see about the water/weather conditions. Different strokes, so to speak! I hesitate to RSVP so early; do you put a limit on attendance?

    January 30, 2014

    • Tina N.

The only time there might be a limit would be for camping and making sure there are enough campsites available or the need to have permits. It's also okay to RSVP and the un-RSVP. I think you will see some very early planning and then there will be times someone does a last minute paddle with maybe only a couple day's notice. We are pretty easy going!

I understand the Frankfort Sisterhood has disbanded and been referred to this group, so hope to see some of my "sistas" soon...

I'm canceling. I'm not that great with the more advanced trips. Thanks for setting this up tho.

This trip will likely be cancelled due to high river levels and current from the many inches of rain that have fallen. The KY River can be affected by rain that falls upstream for a week or more. On the 18th we have the Dix R. trip and strong paddlers could go the rookery and beginners on the Dix. I'd appreciate comments over the next couple of days from those with good experience on river current and levels for paddling. Stay tuned for the official decision over the next few days.

I was a strong paddler, but have gotten progressively weaker over time, LOL. Will keep eyes peeled for shorter, easier paddles in the future.

Sounds like a lovely paddle and will get up there sometime to paddle with you...will be seeing some of you the following week/weekend for Grayson campaddling. :)

There are 3 or[masked] foot kayaks for rent for $20 right near the ramp we use. They are the typical rental-type kayak. There are also lots of canoes at the same location. If you are interested let me know. First 3 or 4 get the kayaks that want them.

I'm assuming there are rental canoes to be had? Who do we need to contact in order to reserve?

    April 2, 2014

    • Tina N.

I'm checking on some possible rentals near where we put in but no guarantee. Sometimes people have an extra they are willing to rent/loan. Sometimes we can help find something but, I'm afraid, not always. Yours is not an uncommon question but we just don't have easy answers.

      April 4, 2014

    • Tina N.

Tony, let me know if you want me to reserve one for you. See posting above.

Ha Don, Could a Great, Camping and Kayak trip be built around Fort Boonsborough Campground. I will be camping there August 14-17th. with the Moonbow Camping Club. I have no idea of the paddling opportunities there. Thanks Jerry from Corbin

There are a couple of OK paddles there in the Ky river in pool 9 and 10 close to where you'll be. If you can drive a little ways, there are some better ones in pool 7 which is where this meetup is. You can shoot me an email via the meetup contact facility and tell me what you are looking for and how far you want to paddle/drive and I can set you up.

I would like to see more combination camping-kayak trips. You can see the excitement building for the Grayson Lake trip. To far for me to tow. Would like to see trips in Lexington, Boonsboro, Corbin, Somerset areas. Thanks Jerry

I have sent an email to Ann who rents kayaks and canoes at the High Bridge ramp. I have not heard back but will report information as soon as I hear from her.
