Clean off the cobwebs, spring kayak and camping at grayson lake

Friday 06/07/13     Exploration of Little Sandy 10:15am we will meet at the campground and proceed to the ramp on state hwy 7 roughly 14 miles south of the campground. Please let me know if you expect to attend this day of paddling. We will head north from the boat ramp....uncharted waters ( well for me at least) out and back. This could be a long paddle...not for the faint of heart.

Friday evening....campground comraderie...

Saturday 06/08/13 10:00 am Little Clifty Boat ramp.

located on HWY 7, approximately 1 mile north of the campground.  GPS:[masked], [masked] other details soon. This is an out and back paddle, appropriate for newbies and explorers. We will find the hidden grotto falls. A beautiful day on the water with rock palisades, scenic creeks and hidden waterfalls. There is no shuttle. Pack a lunch! Upon returning to the boat ramp, paddlers can opt for a longer day or a return to camp. This paddle will be 6 miles at a minimum. Plenty of time for rest and photos. Last year there were mountain laurel blooms floating everywhere and swallows nesting in the cliffs.

Sunday 06/09/13 10:00 am Exploration of the falls of the little Sandy above Grayson Lake. Meet at the cultural center Boat ramp (Little Sandy Heritage Canoe Carrydown GPS:[masked], [masked], directions soon). Again, this is an out and back paddle. There are many waterfalls and creeks to explore in the area above the lake.  This paddle is longer, 8 miles minimum, with the possibility of longer exploration.

I had three wonderful days of paddling, perfect weather, great conversations around the campfire, good food, and fun times meeting-up with friends and making new friends.

Going to be hard to beat this one as a 3 day trip.

I was there two of three days. Had a terrific time with a group of paddlers who meshed well. Can't wait to see some of Tina's fabulous photos. Grayson Lake trip..excellent.

I'm not going to make it until the paddle at 10 on Saturday morning. I'll have a one burner stove that I use for back packing that will boil water for hot drinks and freeze dried foods. Doesn't regulate temperature well so it's not much for regulated cooking. Be glad to share.

  • marcia

Yes, I'm bringing coffee, salad, fruit, wine. I have a Coleman butane stove

    June 6, 2013

Reminder, camp sites 21-23. I believe. I know Robert has 22, and I think I remember Michelle getting 21 and 23 before all her posts were deleted.

    June 5, 2013

    • Robert S.

Yes.. We should have 21-23. I reserved the 22.

Fellow paddlers. For Friday night potluck, I am providing burgers, cheese, buns. Mustard potato salad (sorry not homemade, no time) Decided against brats Don. Too similar to dogs, which you are providing. Next morning, 2 1/2 doz. eggs, bacon and toast, bringing toaster. So please bring items that will compliment the above. Marcia, you said you will share coffee. That's wonderful because its a must have in the early AM for me.:)
Where exactly will we be meeting Friday morning, the entrance to campground, and are we going to the Falls?

Sounds great. Dare I ask the question..do we have a backup plan if its raining hard?

      June 5, 2013

    • Don P.

Just rain, no. Paddle and enjoy the waterfalls the rain brings. Lightning, maybe.

      June 5, 2013

  • Don P.

Don't forget a camp chair and hiking shoes/boots, there are a few miles of trails around the campground.

One other thing! Would someone be willing to provide dessert and/or fresh fruit?

    June 5, 2013

    • Tina N.

I'm bring a rhubarb dessert but it's not a huge amount so some more desserts would be good....especially if you don't like rhubarb.

      June 5, 2013

  • Don P.

We can change up the Friday scheduled paddle if the group wants to do that. If we get a good rain on Thursday, may want to go do the Clifty Creek section on Friday to see the waterfalls - may be less crowded. May have to do it again Saturday when more people will be paddling.

I'm all for that! Two paddlers I know are only coming for the day, seeing the falls would be desirable.

How far to Clifty Creek section?

    June 4, 2013

    • Don P.

1 mile drive from campground. 6 miles or so trip.

      June 4, 2013

I've heard from everyone except Elexia. Most likely, Michelle will be joining us as well. So by my tally, we have 7 definite camping on Fri., 1 maybe. 7 camping on Sat, and 1 maybe. We have 3 camp sites that can hold 9 vehicles. So we're tight for spots....right now, I have RSVPs blocked, so if you are bringing anyone else, or if anyone else wants to come, you need to PM me. It would help if the maybes make a decision. Right now, we are going to assume you are a yes and charge you for both days.

    June 1, 2013

    • Don P.

Make that 8 definite on Fri, 1 maybe.

      June 2, 2013

    • Don P.

OK. Go ahead and RSVP No so that someone else can take your spot.

      June 3, 2013

  • Don P.

Potluck: I'm bringing hot dogs/chili/buns/mustard/ketchup. Everyone should bring their own plate/utensils/cups/drinks, preferably non-disposable.

    June 3, 2013

  • marcia

    OK with me

    June 2, 2013

  • Don P.

Michelle is out, so opening up to one more RSVP

    June 2, 2013

  • Don P.

Near as I can tell, from what Robert paid for his camp site, its going to be more like $20 per person for camping. They are $53.50 each for two days, and I believe you have to get the weekend ones for at least two days. Unless Michelle somehow got hers cheaper. Sorry for the miscalculation. Hope that doesn't scare anyone off.

Is this trip still on? I haven't heard anything from the group in a while.

    May 30, 2013

    • Robert S.

Yes. Don has taken over the organization of the event.

      May 30, 2013

  • marcia

What is everyone doing about cooking, making coffee in am? Are we each bringing our own camp stoves?

    May 22, 2013

    • marcia

I'm borrowing a camping stove from my son, also coffee pot. Everyone is welcome to share.

      May 23, 2013

    • Don P.

I believe all the reserve-able sites have electricity.

      May 24, 2013

  • Don P.

I'm going to call on 5/28 and get a tee time for the Friday 'Twilight" (don't know when that is yet, hopefully around 4) for at least 9 holes of golf. Let me know if anyone else is interested. 9 should be $23.50, Twilight 18 should be $29.75.

    May 21, 2013

  • Malcolm

I may have an extra boat or two if there is interest.

I'll be sleeping in my car. Should I be reserving a site....or is there room for one more car?

    May 15, 2013

    • Tina N.

I'm confused on the number of sites that are being reserved. I'll be glad to split. Can you reserve if it is still needed?

      May 16, 2013

    • Robert S.

I have site 22 which I think is in between the two you had reserved. Tina: I believe we have three sites.

      May 16, 2013

  • marcia

I'm thinking I might sleep in my car. Can't figure out how to pay online.

    May 16, 2013

    • Robert S.

Marcia I will reserve another camp site and we can work it out.

      May 16, 2013

    • marcia

      Ok, thanks Robert

I may install a v-birth in may kayak. Maybe a galley as well. Just for this trip!!!

    May 16, 2013

I'm working on getting a carrier, but currently don't have the ability to transport my kayak.

    May 8, 2013

    • Maryellen S.

depending on how far you have to drive and boat size, you can get foam cradles for $40 at Gander Mtn. and 2 straps and away you go!

      May 8, 2013

    • Robert S.

Let me know I don't have a Kayak to transport so it's just me and camping gear.

      May 8, 2013

Does anyone want to carpool from Lexington?

    May 8, 2013

    • Robert S.

      It's a possibility.. let's talk more.

      May 8, 2013

  • Don P.

Golf anyone? I hope to remember to bring my clubs.

When it gets closer to Spring, I can organize a camp trip at Kendell and kayaking for 16 miles, plus awesome fishing. I have 3 flyrods if anyone wants to try fly fishing. I'm at [masked] if anyone wants to kayak fish soon (not in snow, ice or rain). :)

    January 31, 2013

  • Don P.

Should do the 14-mile as a separate event when we can. Probably while you are away, unfortunately.

May is quickly filling up for me already - a graduation on the 11th, BWA clinic on the 18-19th, another graduation on the 25th....but other than that, sounds like a good plan.

  • Susan P.

Does anyone live near Lake Cumberland and would like to go early kayak fishing this year?

    January 29, 2013

  • Gerry S.

I am a novice kayaker looking for others to paddle with and learn from. I live on Lake Herrington and enjoy a relaxing paddle in the no wake zones. Warm weather only for me.

    January 27, 2013

  • Susan P.

Another great place is Kendell campground below Wolf Dam and paddling and fishing CUmberland River. I will be glad to set something up for Spring. I have 3 kayaks and one for sale (Old Town Loon 160T).

    January 23, 2013

  • Don P.

Where are you thinking about staying? In the campground? Didn't see many other options in a quick search of the area. I favor either semi-primitive or primitive, preferaly padde in, but campground is OK if that's what is available.
