Play Games

Welcome to our regular Wednesday night board games session: 3 - 4 hours of good fun and the perfect way to break up the working week.

We play a wide variety of games. There will be some that you will have heard of and some that you may not have heard of. Some will last a whole evening, whilst others will only be a hour or so. Some are seriously strategic, but most are fairly light hearted. In short, something for everybody!

We'll be playing in groups of 3 - 6 players, so there's always plenty of choice each week. If there's a particular game that you want to play, then please suggest it in the comment's section below or else sign up if somebody has already suggested a game.

Of course, everybody and anybody is welcome to join :)

Sorry guys, I will have to join another day. Emergency at work. I will join in 2 weeks if that is ok. Month end is approaching and that is my busy time. Normally would have been next week only, but the States have put some one off projects on me which have to be done before tomorrow. Will be a really late one. Again, my sincere apologies.

No worries, we will see you then.

I won't be along this week as I've come down with iritis - inflammation of the eye. I've had it before so know what to expect: blurred vision and a fiery red and sore eye that is sensitive to light, for a couple of weeks. Easily treatable with drops so more of a nuisance than anything else. Steroids more effective than an Elder Sign in this instance.

Mat - will you arrive at the usual time? If so, I shall meet up with you then.

Does anyone have and want to play 7 Wonders? I've been told its good and would like to give it a go assuming its doable in an evening.

    September 19, 2013

    • simon c.

7 wonders is only a 40 minute game so I will put it in the bag for next week

      September 20, 2013

    • Michael

Never played 7 Wonders but would be up for a game of it if there's space.

I can bring my copy of Elder Sign (with Unseen Forces) with me, if necessary. If we're talking short games, I can also bring Escape (www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/113294) which plays in, literally, ten (rather noisy) minutes.

Well, I can bring it another week (if I leave the ridiculously oversized box at home). It takes ten minutes to play, and less to set-up and explain - so we could probably slot it in between other games.

    • Michael

If there's space, count me in for Elder Sign.

Hi I'm new but am looking forward to meeting everyone on Wednesday. I can bring Hanabi, Love Letter, Archaelology which are all short card games. Or Cthulhu Fluxx (which I haven't played) or Munchkin. Or if anyone fancies Ghost Stories I could bring that - it never lasts that long as defeating the game is nigh on impossible.

I'm tempted to play ghost stories at some point, did you know the designer says he beats the game consistently and can teach anyone to do the same?

Ok I'll bring Ghost Stories and Cthulhu Fluxx. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Sadly won't be able to come again this week. Actually I was hoping to bring my daughter who's been playing board games for many years, but the pub won't let anyone in under 18 after 7pm. I even offered to leave £50 behind the bar as a good behaviour bond, but they won't budge. Note this isn't a license restriction, just a house rule.

She's a competent player, capable of holding her own in games like Power Grid, and Eclipse etc. Anyone know of a more minor tolerant games club in the area? After all, where are the gamers of the future going to come from if we don't educate our kids in the joys of board gaming?

Hi Dave, I appreciate greatly the fact that you would consider moving vemnue to allow children, though that wasn't the intention of my post.

I do understand both their concerns and I suspect those of members of the club who may enjoy getting away from / playing without, fractious / petulent children. All I can say is that in my experience under 18's should be taken on a case by case basis. Whilst I know my own daughter is intellegent, articulate, well behaved, capable of picking up new games quickly and playing well with adults, including us both being tolerant of the language many adults use (me included!), I have refused to take some of her friends along to other gaming clubs due to their poor level of maturity. So I understand fully the dilema.

... It is right that any child be put on a probationary period, with the relistic expectation that they may be refused continuted membership. I would expect the same for my child, and would willingly abide by whatever decision is made as to her ongoing attendance. Though of course I have no doubt she'd be welcomed, despite being cognicent of the fact that as her father I am undoubtedly biased.

If you are seriously considering moving venue, this site has a list of pubs with bookable function rooms. I know many rooms allow the function rooms to be booked for free these days, just to get the people in through the door: http://www.useyourloc...

Changing the subject slightly, if any member has a teen who likes playing games, let me know, perhaps we can arrange to meet up to play outside of club time?

      Many thanks, Colin

Okay, the usual question: what would you all like to play this week?

I'd like to suggest a change of pace this week and that we play some short, light hearted stuff like Shadow Hunters, Fluxx, Family Business, Cash'n'Guns and other such games. Could the owners of those games please bring them along?

    1 · September 19, 2013

    • Craig D.

Yes I can bring Elder Sign with Unseen Forces Expansion down. There is a chance that I may not be there for 7 so you may have to start the evening with shadow hunters. I like that Dave mentioned Family Business as this is also a game I am wanting to play. So maybe we could finish the evening of with that if Matt can bring it along.

I am hoping for a game of Tzolkin if anyone is able to bring it along

I would be up for a game. Jonathon can you bring my copy along?

      September 20, 2013

    • Jonathan B.

Not sure if I can make it, but if I can I will bring it. Can organise returning it to you if you want.

I have a huge love for board games. Have played Axis & Allies and Settlers of Catan being my favourites. Ticket to Ride, Carcasonne and other strategic/tactical games I really enjoy

Game could easily take up to 4 hours. Experienced playera might even play longer, but I have write ups to lock down the closing positions of the armies if we would want to continue the game. A&A Pacific I have as well and is more dynamic and guaranteed done within that timeframe.

Fab idea to organise a separate session for that game
