What makes a board game most fun?

Thanks for sharing this, John. I agree with your observations that ultimately its the emotional qualities of a game that makes it a great game or a dud! If we can tap into the emotions of a player through a "synergistic design of theme, mechanics, and playability" we have a great game.

I am working on an educational game. I wonder, if one is trying to impart information rather than extract it - say in a "trivia" game - is there a term for that?
