Guide for newcomers
We like to think of Boardgame Monkeys Brussels as a friendly place. This guide is to let you know what to expect at your first meet-up with our group. There are many places to play in the city but it can be tricky to find them out. We will help you integration yourself into activities organized in the Brussels city area.
Enjoy playing games? Have you heard of Carcassone, Ticket to Ride or Dominion? No, then you should join us for one of our game nights and enter the world of Euro and Designer games you didn't know even exist.
Euro or Designer games are fun, thematic, and through provoking games that are often characterized by simple rules but deep understanding and re-playability.
No experience is necessary, we are always teaching the games we bring with us. Just come in and join us for some fun.
We organize at least (often more) 2 events a month. The week-night sessions are taking place in at La table Food & Games (downtown - Madou Metro - next to Cirque Royal concert hall) with a friendly staff and decent food offer too.
Usual week nights are Thursday and Friday at La Table Food & Games (with the occasional hiccup or shift in schedule due to holidays or other bookings).
We usually start at 7'30 PM, it's best to arrive on time to get the rules explanations and start off with the first group. The rules will always be explained so it does not matter if you're new or experienced in playing boardgames.
Once a month, we play in another location called the Flamingo (near Saint Catherine - Yser metro). The group is usually playing lighter games during these sessions.
What (games do we play)?
All kinds of tabletop and boardgames: card games, war games, dexterity games, trading games, family games, cooperative games, simulation games. If you don't know any of these games or haven't played many games before - don't worry all games rules and mechanics are explained during our events. We have players joining with various skills from starter to experienced level.
With so many boardgames choices, we have to make selections on what we play during our events. Therefore, there are also games we don't play - find out more over here.
Our games comes from club members, therefore we ask you to be careful when manipulating them (note: average price of a game is 40€). You are free to bring your own game, sit down and play the featured game or grab one of the many we have available. I will be featuring/teaching new game or two every week! So if you are new to designer board games, this is a good place to start.
How (do I attend a meeting)?
1. Check the calendar & announcements to ensure that the meeting is on. Occasionally the schedule does change.
2. RSVP for a meeting you will attend. This is important as there is a limited amount of space and we are tailoring our game selection to the attendees list. If you change your mind, change your RSVP so someone else can take your place. If a meeting is already full, you can put yourself on a waiting list for any spaces that might turn up.
3. Show up. Some eager people start playing games at the appointment hour. Arrive much later and you may have to wait a while for a game. An alternative is to pre-arrange to start a game for whatever time you arrive.
4. Introduce yourself to the host (we're wearing red/white t-shirt), so we can welcome all newcomers. Look towards the top of the meetup attendance list for their name.
5. Play games. Have fun.
