Eat, Drink, (Game) and be Scary! Boardgame Night - Friday, October 25th

  • This location is shown only to members

We're hosting a special Halloween Gaming Night on Friday, October 25th! Please come dressed in costume (though you're welcome to attend without a costume). Adam and I will be putting forward our best Doctor Who (#10) and Amy Pond. Please only RSVP if you plan to attend. As always, we anticipate a mixture of everything from "regulars" to new members at their first event.  Everyone's welcome and we're excited to see old friends as much as new faces.

We will be making specially themed "Dark and Stormies" (Ginger Beer, Dark Rum, and Lime Juice) for this event, but will need people to either bring donations or ingredients if you plan to participate as mixed drinks can get costly.

We generally play more strategy-oriented games (like Pandemic, Settlers of Catan, etc.), but we usually have 2-3 groups going at once, so if there are enough people that want to play a more casual game (like Monopoly or Clue) one of the groups can easily play casual games (though it has been rare that we have played those). The atmosphere is casual and flexible enough to play whatever the attending group is interested in.  We love learning new games so we encourage you to bring games you'd like to play. There are generally more casual, "social" games running later in the night (usually starting around 11 PM) such as Cards Against Humanity or Citadels.

Please bring any games you would like to play (see a list of our games here: http://boardgamegeek.... ). If there's a particular game you'd like to play, you can always suggest it beforehand to check for interest! We still have a few beers left in our fridge and some wine, but no snacks.

We do have two puppies and two cats so those with allergies, be warned!

Be there or be scared!

Thanks for coming everyone! It was quite a party. For anyone who came for their first Friday event, there is usually a bit more of a focus gaming. As expected, last night was a primarily social gathering. If anyone is interested, Ariel and I are going downtown to Frenchmen St tonight in our Tenth Doctor and Amy Pond costumes and would love for other people to come with us!

More fun than I have had in recent memory. Our host and hostess, Adam and Ariel, were very hospitable, warm, welcoming and friendly. Other attendees were very friendly, too. A new and delightful experience, I look forward to doing again. I even learned a game, Citadels, that I have never played before.

Emma has to work late. We won't be there until 9, but if there are people who want our spots, they are welcome to them!

Thats fine Sean! We usually don't get into the games until around 8!

If anyone has one of those utensils that squeezes limes, could you bring it tonight? It looks more like a giant garlic press for limes rather than the typical "juicer."

    October 25, 2013

    • Adam K.

Excellent bring it tonight and maybe I'll buy the same one! :)

Emma and I are definitely coming, but it's from work, so we might be there a few minutes late and probably not in costume.

Won't be able to make it after all. Sorry.

Can't make it after all... I hope you all have a good time!

Hope you can make a future event. There's a game night every Sunday at Z'otz on Oak St. and we'll hold another Friday event soon. Thanks for updating your RSVP to open up a spot!

This email went out to everyone who's RSVP'd but I wanted to post it here as well:

*** This message is for those of you that responded with interest for Dark & Stormies at our Friday event. If you're not interested in Dark & Stormies at this Friday's event, please disregard this message. ***

We want to make sure we get an even supply of the ingredients. Adam & I have calculated the cost of an individual drink as approx $2.50. Any of you offering to bring cash, please bring $5 to $10, depending on how many you think you will drink. Don't worry about the limes. We'll just buy a big bag.

For those of you who offered to bring rum or both rum & ginger beer, you're still welcome to do so, but it may be easier for us to just buy all of the ingredients, especially because we can buy them in larger sizes. If you do want to bring rum, make sure it's Gosling's Black Seal (which is $20 for 750mL) or something equivalent. I’ve tried it with Cruzan dark rum and it wasn’t quite right…

Ariel and I went to Rouse's last night and bought 5 packs (20 12oz bottles) of ginger beer and 5 750mL bottles of Gosling's Black Seal rum. That's enough to make 60 6oz drinks, which should be enough based on everyone's responses!

Ariel, when I started reading your post, I thought "Dark & Stormies" was one of the board games. Boy, am I a newbie at this or what. I will bring a few large bags of munchies.

    October 21, 2013

  • Jason D.

Hey guys, I'll be bringing some cider to the event (Probably Woodchuck.) If anyone else would like to have some, let me know. I'll be happy to bring a couple of six packs. Otherwise I'll probably just bring one.

We've reached "capacity" at this point for this event, which has created a waiting list. If anyone isn't attending, please update your RSVP top open up more spots. I will be talking to Ariel about opening up more spots for this event, but it's going to get VERY crowded if everyone shows up. Go ahead and keep signing up if you want to come so we can see how many more spots we need. Again, if you aren't going to be able to make this event, PLEASE update your RSVP so that we can plan accurately.

Adam and Ariel, thank you for allowing us to play at your residence. I do not drink alcohol, but, is it okay to bring snacks? I like to play the more traditional games e.g. Monopoly, chess, checkers, Trivial Pursuit and scrabble. I have all of these games. I am glad that you allow for these games.

    October 21, 2013

    • Adam K.

Snacks are always welcome. We have a few people who occasionally want to play a more traditional board game, but it all depends on who shows up at each event. Most of us started with those traditional games, but once we started to play more regularly, started looking to branch out to new games to have a bigger variety and get more in-depth game-play. With a very large crowd, there'll likely be enough in attendance to play a traditional game, but I would encourage you to try some new games and see what you think of those as well!

The only board game I own is Survive, which is a great game I played a lot in my childhood. I can bring it if there is interest. If not, I'm sure there'll be plenty other games.
