Classic/Traditional Games at Box Hill Festival!

Calling all true gamers! Come play classic games in the middle of this vivid cultural festival in a Box Hill park! We went last year and had a ball playing games with all sorts of people young and old!

The City of Whitehorse is hosting a "Global Fiesta" event on Sunday 17 March 2013 from 12 noon–5pm at the Box Hill Gardens to celebrate cultural diversity. Part of the event involves playing traditional games (such as mahjong) and teaching those who are interested.
There will be tons of other activities throughout the day, for more info please visit this site: http://www.whitehorse.vic.gov.au/Global-Fiesta.html

Please suggest any others, but games will include: Mahjong, Chess, Rummikub, Backgammon, Chinese Checkers, Draughts, Scopa, Dominoes... even Cribbage has been deemed acceptable!

Let us know below if there are any classic games you could bring?

(Or any games tied in to specific cultures or countries)

I might drop in for a bit. I can bring...err...pick-up sticks? I have the Mikado variety. The origins of this game, however, appear unknown.

Very ancient Chinese game. Possibly invented by the gods or some monks.

Oops ... normally you should be able to click on the Location Map linked from the location under the event title, but I see this time it was misplaced, sorry about that!

Hi Christopher, I can be there at 11:40am and I'm looking forward to playing some classic games:) I do own 2 box sets of classic games that I shall bring along, with games such as Chinese Checkers, Ludo (one of my favorite games to play) Checkers and even Snakes and Ladders! I also can bring along Rumikub and Qwirkle :)

Sounds excellent David, though we might hide Qwirkle to begin with - too modern ;-)

    • David

OK, Qwirkle I shall hide on the day, yes too modern...I am happy to go back in time and play classic games for a day, yeah!

i'd be up for some 500

    March 14, 2013

    • Christopher

I think 500 might not pass muster as it just looks like an ordinary card game, and part of the purpose of this event is to be "on display" playing a game, and we'll need more than cards for that.
Of course 500 *is* a great game, and after we've cleared this hectic month, I hope to run some special events for 500 and Rummikub

      Someone say "Catan"?

      March 15, 2013

    • Christopher

IFF Settlers of Catan is there, it would mostly be a demonstration piece to show to wide-eyed members of the public to demonstrate what modern board games are like.
It would not be a suitable occasion for folks to hunker down and play a full game of Settlers.
At least that's how I see it. I'll check to see what my "handler" has to say.

I plan to get there around 11:40, so it would be nice to see some of the rest of you there around the same time! :-)
