Party & Social Games Session @ Cafe Games

Yes, this is a dedicated session for all kinds of party and social games! No euros or strategy games.
More of a social club than a strategy session!

The restaurant lunch menu is available from the bar from 12 to 3 and drinks too! "Eat, drink and be merry!"

If you’re new, I highly recommend you start during this session, so you get to meet a variety of people, in some lighter games, before getting into the long strategic games of the later session.

We’re looking for

Party games, like Dixit, Pictionary, Telestrations, Taboo, Cranium, Reverse Charades, Billionaire, Perpetual Commotion, Articulate, Anomia, Cards Against Humanity etc

• Word games, like Scrabble, Scattergories, Boggle

• Tile games, like Qwirkle, Rummikub, Dominos,

• Card games, like Uno, 500, Bridge, Canasta

• Dexterity games, like Jenga, Crokinole, Bausack and Foosball

• and of course the Psychological/Negotiation games like Werewolf (Mafia), The Resistance, Bohnanza

If you've never played these games before, we're more than happy to show you how. :-)

You’ll notice that after 5pm the latter half of this session overlaps with the “All Games” event. You’re welcome to stay on and continue to play lighter games or even try some more strategic games. ( In case you’re wondering, ruling is, Munchkin is strategy. )

Yes I will be bringing along *some* games, but this sort of event works best when everyone helps out.

GOLD COIN donation appreciated - helps with costs.

Pay: for food, drink as you go. (This is a restaurant, not your mate's garage, so I should not need to spell out that it's inappropriate to bring your own food and drink)

I have some lost property from this event.
A black scarf-shawl and a copy of "love letter" the game.
Also some pieces I have accumulated. I will post a picture soon.

Yes I have both of those, I'll put them in the photo.

I had so much fun and got to know quite a few games. Loved Articulate, though I did find myself just the opposite. I wish there was a Sunday event just like this(is there one?). Cricket season is on , and hubby can't babysit anymore. May be I'll just drag the kids along :)

    September 16, 2013

    • Poongothai

Okie, that is right. It should be an adult event only. I'll just pray for my hubby's team to have an early exit, I do it anyway. :)

      September 17, 2013

    • Christopher

Perhaps you can just come for part of the event on Saturday? 11 hours is a very long time, surely your hubby doesn't need all that time? ;-)

Liked having the 2 different sessions. As you know I was able to get people interested in learning cribbage, which was a first.

Yes I was so excited to see that happen! I know some others wanted to play 500 too but in the absence of Grey Dave there wasn't someone I could point to. I'd be really keen if we could put our heads together and think of some clever way to feature card games when they usually get drowned out by all the colourful games boxes.

I loved playing that Chinese whispers game where u draw and guess.. sorry to all for my dirty mindness but was more fun haha does anyone know the name of the game?

    September 16, 2013

    • Alastair

I believe the name of the game you are looking for is telestrations. There really should be an adult version of the game. I usually blame the drawer for making it dirty ;-)

Once again, I will rate this Meetup positively. The people I played games with were friendly. I liked that people are willing to teach how games are played for those who have not played some games before.

I enjoyed playing the likes of Skip-bo and Tsuro.

Apart from playing games, we had a laugh, and some random, silly discussions. For example, here's some information about the tallest Jenga tower....

Love the diversity of games and the willingness of everyone to jump into whatever is offered.

Bringing Tsuro of the Seas (which can be turned into regular Tsuro very easily); Nuns on the Run; Kill Doctor Lucky; and Tweeeet. Also a few games for the evening session, but I won't mention them here. :)

Hi am new to this but enjoy board games. Won't be able to make it at noon but will be there around 1pm :)

I'm sure you'll find loads of new games and people to play with Daniela, good to have you along. Don't be afraid to approach people at the main table for a game, we're all pretty friendly.

Hi this is my first time with one of these events and am looking forward to it. I've got a few party games I can bring...let me know if they're suitable:the resistance, shadow hunters, cash n guns, dixit. Wish I'd known about a group like this a long time ago!

    September 8, 2013

    • Stuart

Resistance and Dixit are two games that make very regular appearances here. I can't comment about the other two.

      September 8, 2013

    • Christian Gemballa M.

      Shadowhunters is quite popular too.

      September 9, 2013

  • Joe M.

Hi Guys!. Not sure if I'll be there for the whole day, but will definitely try to drop by at some point. Got my copy of "Boss Monster" a few days ago. It's a nice little card game (15-20 mins) for 2 to 4 players. Will bring it with me in case someone wants to try it out.

Caroline and Nick: I think I got the "Resistance bug"... will try to join a game if I can!.

Chris , you are the organizer for this event . Arrange it as you see fit . People have the option to attend the session or not to if they don't like it . You don't need to justify your arrangements/changes for this event.

This new format will be an interesting experiment and can tell that it's been well thought out, especially having the party games session first. Can't wait to see how it pans out.

Stuart, is that the Wood-Panel van rocking up out front your place now? Oh yep, there's the coats.

      September 2, 2013

  • Christopher

Just a reminder, although I'm sure most of you managed to have the reading comprehension to follow it, you are still very welcome to attend Cafe Games for a massive 6 hours of game playing for all and any games that you're interested to play, be they euro, strategy, thematic, but following people's recommendations, I've made that from 5pm onwards. This specific event you're at now, is just for the party and lighter games, but on the very same day, we've got this Cafe Games event: http://www.meetup.com/Boardgames-group-party-and-strategy-games/events/132968642/ At which you can play euros and other games.

I am disappointed that one individual has chosen to take up a crusade against this new style of event since it does not follow the pattern of the eight other games clubs in Melbourne.

David, it's a fair enough question ... for at least the first attempt we're having the Mahjong players after 5 as well. I've already discussed that with them :-)

      September 2, 2013

    • Christopher

Yes Mark, that was the original suggestion that people made, two sessions, but after much thought and discussion we decided it wasn't practical.
As per my email, the second session is "normal Café Games" - all games of any kind. If you like, you can think of the first session as the "party games club" - focused on the lighter-style of games, like Chess Clubs are focused on Chess.

I know different people come to Café Games for different reasons, and it's my notion that this system will either "flatten out" the peak, or give us two lesser peak periods.

Request for a ruling from the umpire, please. "Nuns on the Run" and "Kill Doctor Lucky" - acceptable before 5pm, or no?

Hope so for the murder game

      August 29, 2013

Kill Doctor lucky is fabulous, it's very social and fun and one of my first gaming buys (in original cheapass format).

I remember those beanbags in the photo from the original cafe games! Happy memories...

    2 · August 13, 2013

  • Stuart

Somewhat tentative, but I will be there for the Euros at least.

    1 · August 11, 2013

  • Carlos R.

Any chance of considering changing the order around, I have to go to work at 7ish, and usually get there 2-3pm. As you know prefer the euros but if the party games started after 5 would also mean I would not be late for work( because the game hadn't finished), as they usually are quicker :), + parties are usually in the evening :))
Hope your ok with a bit of feedback.

    August 10, 2013

    • Christopher

Sorry Carlos, this is the order we need to have. If the Euros start first, they won't stop at 5 and we'll have exactly the same event that we have at the moment. Also newer gamers to whom this session will appeal more are less likely to stay for the whole day, improving the capacity.
Unfortunately I know that any time a long running event changes, there will be people for whom it doesn't suit.

HI, I would like to attend the early session for new people being introduced to games. Thank you for your efforst in organising this :) Cheers, Leah
