Party & Social Games Session @ Cafe Games

Yes, this is a dedicated session for all kinds of party and social games! No euros or strategy games.
More of a social club than a strategy session!

The restaurant lunch menu is available from the bar from 12 to 3 and drinks too! "Eat, drink and be merry!"

If you’re new, I highly recommend you start during this session, so you get to meet a variety of people, in some lighter games, before getting into the long strategic games of the later session.

We’re looking for

Party games, like Dixit, Pictionary, Telestrations, Taboo, Cranium, Reverse Charades, Billionaire, Perpetual Commotion, Articulate, Anomia, Cards Against Humanity etc

• Word games, like Scrabble, Scattergories, Boggle

• Tile games, like Qwirkle, Rummikub, Dominos,

• Card games, like Uno, 500, Bridge, Canasta

• Dexterity games, like Jenga, Crokinole, Bausack and Foosball

• and of course the Psychological/Negotiation games like Werewolf (Mafia), The Resistance, Bohnanza

If you've never played these games before, we're more than happy to show you how. :-)

You’ll notice that after 5pm the latter half of this session overlaps with the “All Games” event. You’re welcome to stay on and continue to play lighter games or even try some more strategic games. ( In case you’re wondering, ruling is, Munchkin is strategy. )

Yes I will be bringing along *some* games, but this sort of event works best when everyone helps out.

GOLD COIN donation appreciated - helps with costs.

Pay: for food, drink as you go. (This is a restaurant, not your mate's garage, so I should not need to spell out that it's inappropriate to bring your own food and drink)

On my way, I'll be the newbie looking very unsure if they're in the tight place.
Oh, I'll be carrying apples to apples

    October 12, 2013

    • Christopher

Thanks Jayne, folks had a good time playing that. You were very kind to let them keep playing when you had to leave :-)

Adam, what did the game declare you were? Puffy and Useless but Irresistable? Or was that someone else?

      October 14, 2013

  • Ken

I had something come at the last minute so will not be able to come sadly.

It was so much fun!! We stayed for 10 hours and couldn't believe how fast the time went. Even if you don't know many (or any) games everyone teaches you :) I can't wait for the next one - thank you for organizing the event Christopher !

Yes, Chris does a great job with this event. And I learned that the space we play in is not free, even when we buy food & drinks. But it's free for us to show up, game in hand or not. His hard work gives us as players a lot of freedom. He hasn't asked me to say this, but keep in mind the hard work and expense to put this on the next time you see the donation bucket.

Yes, we all donated. We all assumed the space was free because Chris was bringing the club so many new customers and a lot of them were buying food and drinks (including us). I will let everyone know so the money goes towards the donation bucket instead of the club.

Again, I enjoyed this Meetup. I liked how, when I was standing around, I was invited to join in with others. I will be back again. The staff at the Celtic Club were friendly. I had quite a good mug of hot chocolate.

Great! I learned how to play Dixit! I met up with a friend and introduced my date to the group.

Played some different games, met good people, a fun day. Wish I could have stayed longer.

I've made sure that this time we will have at least one copy of Dixit and Anomia. From the disappointment last time when Dixit wasn't there, it would be good if we could get more copies :-)

    1 · October 8, 2013

    • Ken

Happy to bring my copy of Dixit though I only have expansions 3 & 4.

I'm bringing Rummikub and the card game Canasta! Fans of one will like the other, even if you're a fan of "Samba" too.

Does anyone know if there is a way to STOP receiving notifications from groups you are NOT attending?

    October 11, 2013

    • Erwin

But if you have not RSVP'd for a particular meetup, you shouldn't be receiving messages.

      October 11, 2013

    • Christopher

Mickey, I know you can click "mute" on individual conversation threads that you no longer wish to follow - like "unfollow" on Facebook.
If you wish to leave a whole Meetup group (instead of an event) you can access your profile in the top right hand corner, and I'm sure that has an option to leave the "Melbourne Boardgames Group".
Personally I don't receive emails for events I'm not attending.

Should I bring some games? Off the top of my head: billionaire, canasta, uno, skipbo, balderdash, cranium, apples2apples, taboo, scrabble, ummmmm yeah

    October 8, 2013

    • Jayne

Okay okay, I'll cast out "cards against humanity"

      October 11, 2013

    • Jayne

Think I'll just put my crate of games in my car, just in case ;)

Werewolf anyone? I need to practice moderating, who wants to be a test dummy?

    1 · October 8, 2013

I think i will stick to the basics for the first couple of rounds and then maybe add more players as we go. :-)

Nice, I watched it played a few years ago and really thought I should check out "competitive story telling" again some day!

It's old school, but I'm going to ask the Club for some spoons and get a classic game of Spoons going on. Get ready!

      Ooooooh, it's been so long!

      1 · October 10, 2013

I am confused....this clearly reads "no euro style games" yet I have been told by others ALL games are played. I am interested because it is a longer day but it seems that it is only after 5p that you can play other types of games. So, I am confused because I hear one thing but read another. I still am of the mind that the rules are what's written hence why I have not attended but would be curious to know if there are any groups that meet for a longer time?

    1 · September 17, 2013

    • MickeyJames

Thanks Christopher....I was not part of this group so would not have rec'd any emails. It was just the last couple events I have attended elsewhere people were telling me I should come to this one....and what I was reeading was NOT what they were saying so I thought I'd ask. All good now as I understand changes have just taken place. I was looking for a longer gaming session but with the changes, unfortunately for me, it's about the same as other euro stlyle gaming events. I am a bit curious as to why the decision was made to separate and exclude certain types of games/people and to categorize the event but am sure there was some logic behind it. ANYHOW....the information section of this club should then be changed to reflect whatever changes and prevent confusion because when you read the ABOUT this group...it does not mention the changes and simply reads as a Non Euro game event. Hence the confusion.

      September 17, 2013

    • Christopher

Your profile says you've been in my group for a year though? The Royal Standard events are in the group, as are NSEG, EGF, St Kilda Werewolf etc.
      Not that it matters. :-)

We're the same? I'm hoping we're not the same as euro games clubs, as they focus on euro games and we focus on social games ;-)
This event description above mentions that strategic games are played after 5pm as part of the Cafe Games "All Games" event.

This change was very well received, so it seems that it was a step in the right direction. :-)

Yes, maybe I've missed somewhere I should have updated. Which is the "information section" that you're referring to? Feel free to email me directly via my profile.

  • Paola

what?? why is this event going soon??? are you not organising anymore games events?? :(

    September 17, 2013

    • Sarah

I was confused by the email as well! Very relieved by Christopher's response here.

      2 · September 17, 2013

    • Christopher

Oh right, in the email I meant that the placeholder event to which you've replied will be removed in time.
