Eurogames at the Royal Standard

Come one, come all!

Join a broad mix of friendly folk for a spot of socializing and strategizing with some of the best modern strategy board games around. Enjoy a meal and a relaxing beverage. There are no fees! And beginners are very welcome.

Eurogames at the Royal Standard welcomes anyone who wants to have good fun with good people and good board games.

We are open to all sorts of strategy games, but focus particularly on European-style designer games—Eurogames.

So, you won't see Risk, Monopoly, Scrabble or Hungry Hungry Hippos. But, you will find The Settlers of Catan, Agricola, Carcassonne, Dominion, Puerto Rico, Power Grid, and much, much more.

Never heard of 'em? No problem! Our friendly local gamer geeks are happy to teach and make newcomers feel very welcome. We love our strategy games but we're not too hardcore.

Bring along your favourite game or join a table and learn a new one.

'The true object of all human life is play. Earth is a task garden; heaven is a playground.' — G. K. Chesterton

What are these Eurogames we play?

Eurogames are board games that emphasize strategy, play down luck, often lean towards economic and historical rather than military themes, and usually wrap up in about an hour or two. A hallmark of these games is that you don't need to eliminate the other players to win and you get to do interesting stuff even when it's not your turn.

You name it, it has been made into a board game!

You might find yourself in a fast-paced auction bidding for stocks in an American railway company, building a power grid across China, forging a galactic empire, attracting great thinkers to your palace in Renaissance Italy, ploughing a field in 17th century Germany, hammering out a trade deal as you settle the island of Catan, saving the world from global warming, defending your dynasty in ancient Mesopotamia, running a Japanese sushi bar, co-operating to manage a deadly pandemic, rigging elections in revolutionary France, setting up a wine business in Portugal... and so much more!!!

I don’t have any Eurogames, can I still play?

Of course! There are always plenty of games to play! Space and time, however, are finite, so it's best to get in on time so you can settle into a game.

We also heartily encourage you to bring your own games along. The more who share, the less wear and tear.

Games you won't see.

We sometimes play a lightish wargame, 'Ameritrash', or something with zombies in it, but please—no party games, Monopoly, Jenga, Risk, Cranium, Scrabble, Hungry Hungry Hippos, or the like. Sorry all you Level 17 elves, we don't do role-playing games either.

Where do I find out more about modern board games?

A couple of new games incoming with me this week.. Greater than Games (Sentinels of the Multiverse) new coop deckbuilder, Galactic Strike Force. I am not a fan of Sentinels, but this is something completely different.. build up your ship with all sorts of great addons and such and then take on the evil of the galaxy.. horribly punishing and difficult.. my kind of co-op!

I'll also have the Kennerspiel des Jahres nominee, Istanbul. I'm more than happy to play Istanbul back to back all night as it's that good (it's only 60 minutes!). Highly recommended.

A co-operative game from GTG with lots of bookeeping... Punishing and difficult... Well, it sure SOUNDS like Sentinels of the Multiverse, but that's a good thing for me ! Will be interested to see how that plays.

Clearly I'll have to keep an eye on Istanbul too - sounds like a strong recommendation. Plus we all get to wheel out They Might be Giants lyrics, so it's all win.

Thanks to all that played Istanbul, really enjoying that game. My apologies that I couldn't accommodate everyone, it was very popular!

I'll be bringing it again to both Godzilla and the next Eurogames session, so feel free to hit me up for a seat then!

Thanks one and all for coming down and participating. Was pleased to see the Games Library getting full use too. So I must add a massive extra thanks for all who participated in the raffle (and apologies for running short on tickets by the end !) - we made $65 profit, which goes towards the games library, and covers the cost of our new copies of SETTLERS OF CATAN and PANDEMIC.

Hope to see everyone again in a fortnight for more of the same :)

Something Rome related sounds potentially good to me...

Glory to Rome is brilliant, highly recommend giving it a shot. It does take a little bit to get your head around, but it's a fantastic game :)

I'll be adding two games to the library from the profits we raised in the raffle. We have a copy of SMALL WORLD and a copy of ALHAMBRA, both offered at generous prices by our former leader, Corey, himself.

This week, we will have another couple of great games for the Raffle (and no Fluxx - promise). Entry is $2/ticket ($5 for 3) and all profits go towards the games library fund, helping us build a small pool of simple, shareable games for people to pick from.

    3 · June 26, 2014

    • Ben

Pleased to say we might also have copies of SETTLERS OF CATAN and PANDEMIC to add to the library too - so hopefully lots of people will get involved with the raffle, to help balance the costs of these games. We have three prizes lined up, more details on the night.
