BULL AND BEAR - [May] Cafe Games

Come learn & play fun board games while socialising!

Friends welcome! Over-competitive types need not apply. The idea is light-hearted interaction over some drinks and games.

"Eat, drink and be merry!"

Join us in a relaxed cafe PUB! environment, where food and drink are in plentiful supply as we amuse ourselves with weird and wonderful games.

GOLD COIN donation appreciated - helps with costs.

VENUE: This venue can cope with more than 100 people, so space is not a problem!!

Don't expect serious hard-core strategy games, it's usually more social games like Pictionary, Cranium, Jenga, Cluedo or Trivial Pursuit, or even card games like Uno, Bang! or 500 :-)
If you've never played these games before, we're more than happy to show you how.

Yes, I expect some people will bring more strategic "Euro" games ... that's fine, there will be something for everyone.

NOTE: Because this venue doesn't have its own games, PLEASE bring along any games you can, even if it's just a deck of cards (available Coles, Safeway, Petrol stations ...etc)

Yes I will be bringing along *some* games, but this sort of event works best when everyone helps out.

A good rule of thumb is picking games that last no longer than an hour. Sure, feel free to settle down for a 5 hour game of Monopoly or Risk, but people enjoy moving around the group. If you're uncertain about a game, just bring it and see if anyone's keen.

Starts: 12 midday or whenever you roll in.
Finishes: 11pm

Pay: for food, drink as you go. (This is a restaurant, not your mate's garage, so I should not need to spell out that it's inappropriate to bring your own food and drink)

Excellent. I played 3 games and there were lots of people to play against, and everyone is friendly and into the games.

I'll be bringing Arkham Horror as I've been wanting to play this with a large group for a while. I'll get in early to set it up if I can. Hope to find some other players!

Might also bring some MTG cards in case there are any other players. Look forward to meeting some of you soon.

Thanks to everyone who played. It was great fun. As it turned out, the ancient ones were no match for our intrepid gaming skills. Well done!

@Mark. Thanks for getting back to me. My weekend became rather hectic so I was unable to attend. However I am still very keen to play Arkham Horror, and would be grateful for any future opportunity.

Hi there, any chance you'll be updating this page as the even goes on with seat availability for those of us on the waitlist? Super keen for this one! I'll bring Cosmic Encounter, Libertalia and 7 Wonders

Thank you everyone for your creative suggestions. I think in general they're a little overkill at the moment, but I will keep them in mind. Next month we are back to our regular venue. It is true that I did overbook the venue.

The ideal way for the event to run, and how it does for many people, is that the event starts with short, light, social, party games so people can mix around and meet people, and then moves into the longer games in the evening.

  • Megan H.

Excellent. Played a number of games I was familiar with and learnt some new ones.

I attended this Meetup, and stayed for three hours. Again, I had a good time. I liked it that people invited me to join in with them for the games that they were playing. Thanks to those who were willing to teach me how to play games that I hadn't played before. I will definitely be back in future.

Hey guys, have a hot drink tomorrow, coz I was sick. I apologize in advance for spreading germs. I only meant to stay for a couple of hours, not 6. Cheers

  • Tara R.

Well we didn't get to play in our historical home but it was still pretty good. Good place to bring your date too!

Hey quick question: apparently there are tables now and I'd love to come down - are people going to be sticking around for much later?

    1 · May 18, 2013

Probably at least another hour, maybe more.

Remember folks, we have two nearby rooms for the event today. I say that in the full knowledge that many of you will only see the second room when you come to leave ;-) If you stand looking into the door of our main room, turn around, and there's the second room :-D

    1 · May 18, 2013

    • Christopher

By which I mean there is one room next to the other room, not three rooms :-P

I'm too sick to make this one. See you all in July instead.

God I hope not. I'm hoping for BorderCon in June which may mean missing Cafe Games. I'll MSG you.

Planning on coming between 3-7, 2:30 if I play Agricola.

    May 17, 2013

    • Carlos R.

Seems a shame people have to miss out, maybe someone on the waiting list can take my place when I leave 7:30ish.

      May 18, 2013

    • Christopher

Ha, don't worry about it Carlos, 100 people is extremely large for this venue ... as it is I am nervous that we won't have enough room for those already on the list. I would have picked a larger venue but they're hard to find or expensive.

      May 18, 2013

  • Kerrin

Yay, I am off the waiting list! :-) So if anyone is interested to play Agricola, come and play. Happy to teach newbies. Starting at 2.30pm. Room for 4 more, well 3 cos Kathy already put her hand up :-)

I'm new here. Wondering how you would fit so many members on a table to play. Wouldn't it be crowded?

Hey guys....Im an ESL teacher and I have 15-20 adult students from Europe, Asia and South America who want to come and meet you and play board games...but only on a week night, any chance of something happening on Friday the 17th of May? and yes we can bring our own games.....

    May 8, 2013

    • Jed K.

Wednesday the 22nd of May is Euro Games at the Royal Standard if that suits

      May 8, 2013

    • Christopher

Isn't Eurovision on Sunday 19th? I know at least one Eurovision party on then.
Elizabeth, does it specifically need to be 17th May, or can we arrange another date for you?

      May 9, 2013

  • Mark

Wow, these events are popular! Okay, waiting list it is...

    May 8, 2013

    • Christopher

Normally we can fit more people in, but it's a smaller venue this time.

_Slight_ change of plans; I won't be there until 3pm or a bit later.

    May 6, 2013

  • Julian

Back in town for the weekend.

    May 4, 2013

  • Mark

Hey Christopher, What prompted the change in Venue?

    May 2, 2013

    • Christopher

Despite having it booked at the start of the year, the Celtic Club management contacted me to say they would need that day for an important irish performer. Other convenient weekends around were unavailable. The Bull and Bear isn't as large, but they're very friendly and don't charge rent since we're buying food and drink. I'll be considering capping the numbers at 100, or maybe less if we can't get both rooms - we did last time we were there though.

      May 2, 2013

Cool sounds good, a change is good as a holiday. :-)
