[Jun] Cafe Games: Big Saturday Boardgames Day

Come learn & play fun board games while socialising!

Friends welcome! Over-competitive types need not apply. The idea is light-hearted interaction over some drinks and games.

"Eat, drink and be merry!"

Join us in a relaxed cafe PUB! environment, where food and drink are in plentiful supply as we amuse ourselves with weird and wonderful games.

GOLD COIN donation appreciated - helps with costs.

VENUE: This venue can cope with more than 100 people, so space is not a problem!!

Don't expect serious hard-core strategy games, it's usually more social games like Pictionary, Cranium, Jenga, Cluedo or Trivial Pursuit, or even card games like Uno, Bang! or 500 :-)
If you've never played these games before, we're more than happy to show you how.

Yes, I expect some people will bring more strategic "Euro" games ... that's fine, there will be something for everyone.

NOTE: Because this venue doesn't have its own games, PLEASE bring along any games you can, even if it's just a deck of cards (available Coles, Safeway, Petrol stations ...etc)

Yes I will be bringing along *some* games, but this sort of event works best when everyone helps out.

A good rule of thumb is picking games that last no longer than an hour. Sure, feel free to settle down for a 5 hour game of Monopoly or Risk, but people enjoy moving around the group. If you're uncertain about a game, just bring it and see if anyone's keen.

Starts: 12 midday or whenever you roll in.
Finishes: 11pm

Pay: for food, drink as you go. (This is a restaurant, not your mate's garage, so I should not need to spell out that it's inappropriate to bring your own food and drink)

Photos and videos from previous Cafe Games events can be found on our website  http://cafegames.wordpress.com

Pro Tip of the month: When you go to this event at the Celtic club if you can pre pay for parking at 330 la trobe. It will only cost you $3 and you can enter and exit just by your card no need to worry about tickets and the place closing on ya

I lent my bag of dice to a group playing Star Munchkin early afternoon and it has gone missing, if anyone has picked it up by mistake can you please let me know and bring it to the next Cafe’ games. It is a small beige cloth bag with a paw print on it. Thanks.

To those that were there until the end last night and new about my predicament with my car being locked in the carpark, I ended up getting in after a security guard that works nearby gave me the number to call for after hour’s assistance. Two other funny things about this (you need to know I drive a flatbed Ute)

    1. What is the use of a sign stating the number to call to get access after hours being behind a locked roller door? (which I found out after getting in)

    2. When I got to my Ute my car keys were sitting on the tray, I must have left them there after getting my bag of games out at midday, so I’m lucky I even had a car to come back too.

Anyway, other than that it was a great day.

That's the one I think I park in, just to the right of the Welsh Church, yes? Douglas parked in the one to the immediate left of the same church, metres away :-(

      June 10, 2013

    • Douglas C.

Well at least I have learned 3 things from this experience. 1- where not to park, 2 - where to Park, and 3- that it costs a bucket load to get your car out after hours.

Hi everyone - some photos posted up on Flickr for your enjoyment: http://www.flickr.com/photos/54928681@N03/sets/72157634040242877/ I only got around to snapping shots later in the day. I'll try to get a better spread next time. And the usual disclaimer: if there's a strong objection to having your photo up, let me know and I'll take it down. Have a good week!

I was looking at all the games on the main table and saw a bag that looked like the one you described! Would have been about 5pm.

Hi guys!. I'll be bringing Game of Thrones (2nd Ed.) along. I'd love to get 5 more players. If anyone's interested please let me know and we can arrange a time for it, as it can be a fairly long game (2-3 hrs).

    Cheers!.

I see the game's full this time, but I'd be interested if anyone wants to play next time.

      June 8, 2013

    • Nick A.

Joe - thanks for bringing it and teaching it so well - spread the FFG glory ;). It's not an easy game to learn, let alone do well in; so the fact that 3/4 newbies to the game were in game-winning positions is an excellent result.

The best time ever. My friend and me really enjoyed the night and look forward to the next meet up. And sorry to David. You made me and Abbey as "Lovers." But I voted you a werewolf. :P

nota real gamester; was hoping to find card games but no evidence of that so willnot be therer

    June 7, 2013

    • Douglas C.

Pity she did not give it a go, the last meet up at the Bull and bear was my first and I loved it, my first impressions were the opposite of Trish’s though, I thought there would mainly be traditional card and board games, as I am not a fan of traditional card games I was not sure if I would enjoy it, but didn't just dismiss it like Trish, I came and enjoyed a wide range of games, was introduced to games like werewolf and everyone respected my games – not one piece missing (I found my lost dice by the way). I do like complex in-depth games more myself especially if they involve players interacting but love that it can be easily Broken up with other games like Blockus (yes I am bringing this again, very popular), I have not had anyone to play games with for a long time but I enjoyed the day so much I have ordered a few new games which hopefully I’ll get soon. So as someone mentioned before, hats off to Chris and anyone else who is involved in organising cafe’ games, great job.

Like many have said, I don't see the need to change it because of a very narrow point of view from someone who didn't even attend. I've attended a few Cafe' Games now and only ever once before now saw someone say a bad comment feeling like they were an outcast there and everyone being uninviting and keeping to themselves. I tested this at the next one and spoke to heaps of people I didn't know and they all talked with me and didn't dismiss me because they were playing something. I agree a lot with what Edgar has said, the system is running quite well. However I think we need to accept that every once in a while someone will complain, and if it equates to 1 from over 500 attendances, I think we're doing ok. Game On Everyone! \m/

  • Sarah

I'll be bringing a prototype game (I don't design games, so its not mine!) , from the USA, called Booty. About pirates sharing treasure. It is part luck, part strategy, as many games are. Its pretty fun. =)

I have not been to a meetup of this group yet. I see there is a waitlist. Does this mean I can't rock up. Those RSVP numbers look might impressive.

    June 8, 2013

    • Christopher

Hello Joel, yes unfortunately the event is full. If you're free after 6pm, then it might be worth a look in as we may be past the peak by then. The later you arrive, the more likely there are to be spaces. 7 is better than 6, 8 is better again.

Anyone feel like teaching/ playing Lords of Waterdeep?

    June 7, 2013

I would be interested in playing Lords of Waterdeep.

      June 7, 2013

    • Paul

      Meeeee!!!

      June 8, 2013

  • Jonathon

These are the games I will be bringing with me: Airlines Europe, Lords of Waterdeep, Village, Pandemic, 7 Wonders, Race for the galaxy and Kingsburg. I might bring Archipelago with me, but only if people are willing to play a 2 hour+ game.

    1 · June 5, 2013

    • Erwin

I'm happy to learn Archipelago! Not sure if we would be able to coordinate a time to play (i.e. late afternoon/early evening depending on when I get booted out of Westeros), but I'm going to bring 7 Wonders so you could potentially swap the two in your bag. All good if you decide you can't be bothered bringing/teaching it as there will be many other choices around. :)

      June 7, 2013

    • Jonathon

I love to hear more people are interested in playing Archipelago, but I have to warn people, in this game, there is a lot of things going on and it quite an in depth game.

      June 8, 2013

  • Darren P.

Hey Chris. I'll be bringing a +1 as well as gloom and carcassonne. Maybe another game. Any suggestions on places in the city to source new games other than mind games?

    June 7, 2013

    • Jason

Milsims in Bentleigh is great for good prices. Also Classic Comics in CBD has some good prices on games too if they have them.

      1 · June 7, 2013

    • Darren P.

Thanks guys. I'll definitely look into all these options. I look forward to tomorrow's meetup. Game on!

Not too well at the moment. Hopefully make it to the next one!

    June 7, 2013

David, any chance of the game we didn't finish playing at the last eurogames (i forgot what it was called) i can't make tommorows eurogames but i would love to keep playing it.

    June 4, 2013

    • Jason

I believe that was Lords of Waterdeep. One of my fav's after only one game. I'm sure it'll be there.

      1 · June 5, 2013

    • Ariane

Yes it was and i see jonathon is bringing it. I might post to see if anyone wants to teach it.

Last minute change to plans ... see people next time

    June 6, 2013

  • Sarah

Also, trying to decide whether to bring Scattergories, Dixit, or Telestrations. Dominion would be another option. Too much trouble to lug more than two games in over a walk and public transit, so it'll just have to be Booty and one other game. People tell me what you'd most like to have!

    1 · May 29, 2013

    • Edgar

      Dominion!

      June 4, 2013

    • Ken

Sarah bring Dixit. I'm happy to bring my copy of Telestrations as well so that the others can play it if they wish.
I will bring Discworld as well.

      June 6, 2013

  • Stuart

A small request, if I may ... I left my copy of Lords of Waterdeep at the previous Eurogames at the Royal Standard, as people were still playing it when I left. If whoever picked it up could bring it on Saturday, I would be very appreciative - I'll be seeing some (non-gamer) people on Sunday, and it would be nice to have the option (although Flash Point and Ticket to Ride are still with me, so it isn't hugely urgent.)

    June 5, 2013

  • Lili D.

we would come rather early and leave in the afternoon because of work in the evening.
thanks, if not, maybe the next time =)

    June 5, 2013

    • Christopher

That's perfectly okay ... No one needs to stay the whole time ... that's just the available hours

      June 5, 2013

  • Paul B.

sounds like the game libertalia which came out last year where pirate characters try and get as much booty tokens as possible.

    May 30, 2013

    • Sarah

Well, upon googling libertalia, I must say I actually think they are more different than one would guess from my description. Booty focuses not on GETTING the booty in the first place, but in negotiating a fair way to divide it up amongst the different crew members. Where as it looks like libertalia is about the plundering itself.

      May 30, 2013

  • Reiko & J.

Sounds great. Does anyone have Risk? It is a great board game of world domination. It's fun, not serious.

    May 28, 2013

    • Douglas C.

I'm going to try and get a game of ATTACK! going your welcome to join or check that out as well, I haven't played a game of Risk since I found ATTACK!, If your a fan of Risk (which I was) you will probably like it. It can be serious, but it all depends on the players. It is nowhere near as serious as games such as Hundred Years War, Henry III or Axis and Allies (if you know them).

      May 28, 2013

    • Douglas C.

I may also be up for a game of Risk if i don't get enough players for Attack.

I received a new deck of Cards Against Humanity the other week and haven't had a chance to play. Is that game welcome in a public setting? It's very M15+!

    2 · May 23, 2013

    • Christopher

Yep, Cards Against Humanity is always pretty popular at Cafe Games :-) It's a pub venue anyway and an adult event

      May 23, 2013

    • Tam (.

Oh my goodness please bring it :D

      May 26, 2013

  • Douglas C.

Hi all, Loved my first meet at the bull and Bear, everyone was so welcoming.

I'll be bringing ATTACK! this time, It's kind of like risk (on steroids) crossed with Axis and Allies and monopoly all in one, but not too complicated and great fun, Up to 6 players, games can go anywhere from an hour up to 6, depending on victory conditions set.
I would like to kick a game off around 2:00ish and maybe one around 6:00, and i'm happy to teach.

I will probably use all victory conditions which means a game of 6 will probably run a little over an hour and a half (the less victory conditions the longer the game goes)
If anyone is up for a long game I'm also open to that.

I will not bring Game of Thrones edition one this time, as someone else already is bringing edition 2, but will bring a range of my other games again for everyone to enjoy.

    May 23, 2013

    • Joe M.

Count me in for the 6:00pm one. Hopefully our GoT game will be finished by then!.

      May 23, 2013

I'm off to BorderCon in Albury :-)
